Johnny Depp is going to be Willy Wonka in a 2005 release of a remake of the first Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

Also to be released in 2005, Pirates of the Caribbean 2! Starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow!!

The original is amazing. I can't imagine Depp playing the role though. I actually think that Marilyn Manson would be a lot better suited for the role. His old music was influenced by the original movie and he has the right look for it given the right costume and makeup job.

Hell, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was just a religious metaphor for temptation and redemption. It's only apropriate to have the "antichrist" play the role of the tempter and redemer of humanity...

It was, actually. Roald Dahl was an extremely religious man and wanted wrote books that would teach kids good religious morals, but in a context that wouldn't bore them to death or make them question things. What kid is going to question a story about a kid getting to visit a candy factory that "secretly" promotes religious ideals? They'll get brainwashed without anyone realising it.
