that happened to me, I knew right away it was the exploit and grabbed that patch.
But if something happens to my computer, and my music files.. and there is anyone even remotely related to it, I would break their legs. |

ok
microsoft handled this VERY poorly. The patch to fix the RPC buffer overflows ISN'T ON [ www.windowsupdate.com. ] Didn't apply the patch yet? Don't waste your time scanning for available patches and fixes. [ www.microsoft.com ] Go there, chose which OS you have and install this patch quickly, otherwise your box will turn into a slave DDoS machine. |

Also,
If you know you're running WindowsXP, but aren't sure about XP 32bit or XP 64bit, stick with the 32bit patch. |

it's 99.9% the 32-bit version unless you are using an itanium workstation or something... |

i don't think i'll be affected, i'm hidden behind a hardware firewall that doesn't let me do simple things like host war3 games and send/recieve files over icq..
i think thats the main reason i've never been hit with one of these backdoor viruses... |

If you don't want to get hacked by the rpc exploit simply limit its permissions.
Install a firewall and denie it access to the internet. the filename is called rpcss.exe |

I had the same problem last night with my PC.
Here is what ive done to get it fixed Installed the Win XP RPC exploit patch : [ www.microsoft.com ] I also ran Windows Update to dwl & install some other security releases .... I also went in Admin tool services -=> Setup the RPC service to auto-restart if it crashes. Just right click on the service and select properties and then go in the "Recovery" tab. My system didnt reboot due to RPC crashing afterwards ... |
