We have to stop comparing live bands to electronic music producers, they are two completly different disciplines.
The only way playing live electronic music is even possible by one or two peoples is by braking your songs down into sections/parts/loops and then putting them all back together. That doesnt leave much to chance in most casses and relie's hevily on automation and pre-production anyways.
There are a few ways of seeing the "live set". One is the by judging the producers by the same standards you would a live musician, and the other would be like comparing him to a visual artist.
Personally I find the producer shares more in common with the visual artist, seing as most of the work is done in studio. The "live performance" then becomes more of a "vervissage" where the artist showcases his recent productions.

Bassically there is not much improvisation going on one way or an other. Its the nature of of the art. Most "real" musicians can only play one part at a time with any level of proficiency. So who is playing the rest of the track?

It has been said that there is no risk in "showcassing" your music. I have to dissagree. Whenever its your songs that are playing publicly, your balls are on the chopping block and you feel it.
If you are remixing your music, at least if the tracks suck, you can always say that its a "real live act" ;)

Anyways, the way I like doing it is by mixing my tracks through an analogue bord and then adding musical performances like percussions, guitar, bass or samples and fx to the mix. Its one way of doing it. So far, I havent played the same set twice.

See y'all at SPORE!!!

:D
I'm feeling body and soul right now..
