Kemek plays at Borken / Saphir April 16th
here is the full transcript of interview with him... partially appeared in Lallaland published april 10th / [ www.hour.ca ] / thanks to the Hour (*=Steve Lalla's question) *You've started a second label? Roke Records? Is that running smoothly? Anticipated street date still May 1st? Yes, it's taken us awhile to get things off the ground but it's up and running and we're on point for a May 1 release of our first release, Kemek the Dope Computer: "Future Modular Remixes." It's remixes of my first breaks release, "Future Modular." Remixes by myself, Loes Lee (of Moving Target), and Digital Rust (KWS Records). *Why did you start a second label? Dope Computer Records, my first label, was basically a wish-fulfillment thing for me. I'd always wanted to do my own label, and since other labels didn't seem interested in my music, it seemed like the only way things would get going was if I did it myself. So I did the one record and promptly ran out of money. It did the trick because other labels came calling, but there's something uniquely satisfying about running your own label. So I talked to (LA promoter and DJ) Robtronik about getting together to start a new label. Seeing as it would be a partnership, the name would have to change to something else. *Is the word 'Roke' some sort of twisted amalgamation of the words 'Robtronik' and 'Kemek'? Why yes, it is. *Does Roke have a specific purpose? To release great breaks music. We're big supporters of the North American scene but we won't limit ourselves to it either. Basically if both Rob and I would play it, it could be a Roke release. *I was gonna ask if you have a day job S it appears that you work at Honda. Actually I'm the assistant managing editor on two magazines, Car Audio and Electronics and Honda Tuning. No, I don't know crap about cars or stereos. I do know about words and grammar and such, and that's what I do: correct stories for publication. *Your site seems fairly well-maintained, and it's obvious that you get quite a lot of production done. Do you consider yourself a workaholic? Devoted to breaks? I don't consider myself a workaholic, because that denotes some sort of neurosis. I'm happiest making music and DJing, so I try to do it as much as possible. That being said, I can tend to disappear into my studio for days on end, so I have to find the balance between being social and being solitary. But that's just how I am !!! |
