it's a good idea to take down all the numbers off your phone every now and then, and e-mail them to yourself. that way if you lose it, or it runs out of batteries while you're out, you can still access the numbers |

I suggest you use a DID with VoIP [ en.wikipedia.org ] While self-employed, I used [ www.diamondcard.us ] with SIP using the GPL/multi-OS software Ekiga. They also have voice mail sent to email for free (taking minutes while receiving). I was very satisfied. It's worth it even just to receive emails through a phone ! I have bluetooth module for my laptop and can connect an audio emitter/receiver so could take calls in other rooms. It's basically like Skype but you can choose your software, protocol and DID provider ; like comparing Mac and PC. |

Only question I guess I have is what ISP to go with since I need to set all that up at the same time and don't want a land line really... in the traditional sense at least. Basically, instead of using a phone line like a traditional call, you're using a network (internet) but the other is usually a regular telephone user so you need a service that does the call. However the line is much cheaper than a regular line and the DID provider usually have phone charges much lower than the traditional ones like long distance. The flipside is that you're tied up to an internet connection if you want to have a live call (ie: mr. client I know you're crazy busy so I'll make sure to take the call at 15:00) however like cell unreliability for live calls the solution is voice mail and what's better with this is that you receive it by email ! You install the protocol-compatible (SIP in this example) software then connect protocol accounts with basic infos server URL, user name and password from the DID then optionally (preferably) create an account to receive a call through another client (if you frequently contact someone it would be good to show him/her) ; the software should guide you for the latter. It's similar to having an IRC client connect to multiple servers. Connection times are decent, like older cell services, 2-3 sec and you can put your software in auto-accept mode to the caller won't have to wait until you accept the call. The DID in my example (diamondcard) has an extensive behavior manager that include how long to wait to take a voice mail, I don't remember all it did but I was surprised. For the moment, diamondcard charge 5$/month for local and toll-free (YAY!) numbers. Here's common fees : 0.021$/min for canada, 0.108/SMS. If you're away from a computer and want to through your service, you can call their number and will be billed 0.054/min for canada. |
