'cuz it was mentioned: HHC and hardstyle do not represent the entirety of the hardcore scene!

there is some harder music that would fit right in, methinks. maybe next year, if enough interest is shown?

after working for the Kinetik fest this week, working at the industrial fests for years now, i know how hard it is to put this kind of event together, and that you can't please everyone...

btw, maestro fresh wes? really? that's... wicked! ;)

for the record, just 'cuz of the name, i also though it was a psy-fest :p
I'm feeling you up right now..

And ppl who know good Drum'n'Bass (which is rare imo, a lot of ppl fall for any old crap these days) well I consider them part of the elite. If y'all don't wanna be part of that, keep listening to your Aphrodite records, you're doing great.

true there are a lot of untalented posers.. but dont you get that in any scene?

I dunno I think there are gonna be people in any scene I am interested in that are pushing really good uncompromising music - for the love of it - and are really knowledgable and dedicated

there are so many different styles of D&B.... I'm not really fazed if someone makes a name for themself playing a style I dont even like in the first place

also, I've seen firsthand how people can get put on and get all this hype surrounding them. a lot of it is just who you know and marketing yourself.. moreso than talent, I'd say

so once again, just cuz someone makes a name for themself doesn't necessarily mean I have respect for what they are doing. I can maybe respect their drive, but it doesn't mean they have integrity or respect from the underground

and are you saying that I like Aphrodite??? or was that directed at people who like crappy D&B?

actually I have 3 Aphrodite tracks from 93, early 94 that are amazing.. nothing like his later stuff at all.. really deep and atmospheric with really good drum programming... in the early days he actually made very good underground music..

of course his later stuff is a big bowl o' wank. I remember the days in toronto where that stuff was getting so much play by all these knucklehead DJs. those were dark days

my friend actually booked Aphrodite in 2003 in hamilton - paid him 3500 bucks to come down and play a set of utter nonsense jump up anthems. and he was a total unfriendly douche. there was only about 30 people in the whole venue and he didn't speak a word to anyone. honestly I dont know what the fuck my friend was thinking booking him

anyway that's my Aphrodite story

but ya I hear ya, there are lots of D&B guys who are working hard making a name for themselves making great music. that I respect obviously... I just didn't know why they would be considered an elite compared to their counterparts in other genres

yeh I was mainly aiming that at ppl who don't an open enough mind to try something different, like the Toronto jungle scene, stuck in 97' and hardly evolving, I mean..they're coming around now, but only because there are hands forcing them - you can't ignore the evolution of music, it's too powerful.

Also, there's only a handfull of producers making worthwhile D&B, not just any "wanker" pendy drum womp bass jump-up. It takes a whole lot more work to make something actually worth buying, therefore making it an elite few who are able to pull off the sound that makes you go bananas.

ya I hear ya.. I love progression, I'm just really lazy =)

it takes a lot of work to dig thru all the rubbish and keep up with the best releases. there are great D&B tracks, I just haven't gotten around to puttin in the work and tracking them down

I dunno if I could say Toronto is stuck in 97. all my old crew back there were and are pushing really cutting edge stuff.

all the guys I chilled with have one foot in the past, one foot in the future, and that's the best way to be, IMO. they play the best upfront stuff and still search down and play the really tuff underground stuff from the early days (92-95).. and people love it. same in England too.

some of the top guys like Bailey etc still throw down mad oldskool sets on radio 1, etc and do oldskool gigs. they'll never turn their back on the original jungle/D&B. it means too much to the people who were there when it started

(97 is not oldskool - that's just corny jump-up shit... some of those basslines I would hear sound like fucking circus music, for real... and it attracted a bunch of clowns to the scene too.

back in like 98,99,2000... that period sucked for me in toronto. if you weren't down with Vinyl Syndicate you weren't getting booked. that crew had a monopoly on things, and only pushed dark techy sound. .. all their little followers were carbon copying their set lists and playing em in a different order..

that's just my perspective but it was kind of like that

luckily though things changed and their monopoly was broken. people started throwing their own little jams pushing what they wanted to play and booking themselves and their friends

i dunno - you know a lot more than I do about what a gwan with new D&B, but it seems like there are a lot of different styles bein pushed there. maybe I'm wrong.

even when I lived there I didn't pay much attention to what other people were doing, and I've been away a long time

QFT

thank you!

J is fron London. not Hamilton. as Murdock said, he started as a hip hop battle DJ in like 1990 or some shit. not a HHC DJ for fucks sake =)

he told me himself that he started out in a hip hop crew, and then got into the breakbeat hardcore before it was jungle.

when he moved from London to Toronto he got hated on by certain key guys who will remain nameless, and they wouldn't book him.

The reason they hated on him is because he's got crazy talent and stage presence.. and he made their tired ass look rather lame and boring

finally people in the jungle scene were begging these haters to book him, so they really had no choice but to start putting him on the flyers.. and then he just killed it.

just showed up in Toronto outta nowhere and kicked the door in.

my kind of DJ....

I've seen J play retarded oldskool sets that were just off the chain. he's one of the best.

It was london...
and i'm not arguing the fact that he ever played old breakbeat hardcore as dnb as we know it didn't really exist in those days and hardcore pioneered the sound...
but it was hardly how he got his start.
anyway...
here's a quote taken from his own personal website just to clear things up...

"Trained strictly as a battle DJ, Caps dominated his home town of London Ontario's scratch & mix competitions, where he remained undefeated & king of the dance for all
of his adolescent years, while his production skills, even at such a young age earned him opening slots for supreme legends of hip-hop including Ice-T & Evil E, RUN DMC, EPMD, Red Man and tons more before he even left high school. His wide appreciation for music kept him locked on every sound that appealed to him, from hip-hop to hip-house up to breakbeat hardcore down to the rave then off to the jungle, Caps was on top of it all, mixing and producing oldskool jams that shook down the walls of London till there was nothing left, then eventually packing up his arsenal of dubplates and gunning straight for Toronto."

but yeah...
recoil has it right.
i remember those days when he was getting hated on in t.o. pretty well too.
he was dating a girl here in montreal and hanging with us every other weekend.

huh? who is we??

I'm not doing PR for him. what - you kidding me?

more like - real recognize real

I know J from being booked alongside him in the oldskool jungle scene in Toronto - which is a very competitive scene to break in to from out of town, as I did. I have unreleased tracks of J's that he gave me to cut to dubplate

likewise, the other producer you mentioned - 0=0 - is a close friend and DJ associate of mine going back right to when I first moved to Toronto 9 years ago

so.. do you actually know either of those guys personally, or are you just doing PR for them?

seriously, how do you know that? And honestly, what does it matter? And why the fuck are you calling him Jason? Like I'm gonna think any different of you because you have a personal relationship with him? lol Everyone in dnb does, you aren't special. Calling him Jason like you`re his long lost white cousin, you`re hilarious megan, stop taking drugs.
