"The headliners are great, they're just not my thing"

Can understand that...thing is, there's lots of non-headliners that are way more interesting than the headliners themselves.

I just can't agree with the idea that the festival is for non-selective music listeners.

As for the price, Melo, I think it's ok for all the time and money the organisation put in that festival. You pay for the line-up, the music and yes, the party itself (with all the deco and stuff). Anyway, they don't necessarly want more people to come. The number of people is limited and the festival always reach it's limit.

I know people who come in illegaly, but I prefer to pay even though I'm not full of cash, simply because I know it's worth it.

1) Hip-hop isn't edm. Its its own genre. Are you fucking kidding me? That is the dumbest comment ever. Rock and top 40 are also edm by that standard.

2) The garbage I was refering to was the nonsense such as that drag queen show. Boring.

3) Happy hardcore maybe, but that's about it. I think someone needs to either stop hanging with 16 year olds, or needs to expand what they consider to be hard dance and hardcore

4) Ok, its diverse, but its alls still dubstep. And a few steps of dubstep is enjoyable. But if you want to listen to dub step for a whole night...man, you just lost a shit load of credibilty on this board.

5) That's ur opinion. I don't think many people would agree with ur opinions (as we've seen with the dubstep)

6) Yes - shambhala is a great festival. I agree and have said that many times. But that doesn't mean it as good as it could be.

6) Those on this board have more passion for edm than 99 percent of the people at shambhala. So its only natural they judge the acts by a higher standard. And just to clarify, in my second post in this thread I suggested a few hardcore/h3d dance sets... Read the responses by those that have been to shambhala (u and westcoast in particular) and then tell me who on this board comes off as lacking an open mind...because by my count its you and him. Which goes to my point about shambhala goers having nothing on the people making up ravewave.

1) Thing is that there is dance nights with DJs spinning hip-hop. Since it is a form of electronic music, I hardly see how you could not classify it as EDM. However, one way or another, I don't see why it shouldn't have it's place in an electronic music festival.

2) Don't remember the draf queen show...but well, why not? I mean, that's what makes Shambhala that amazing: lots of entertainment.

3) Well, last time I've been to a hardcore rave, all I remember is telling myself I should get the fuck out of there when I heard a linkin park sample in a track. Candy ravers and rebel kids, depending on what kind of hard style of EDM...I'll admit it's a generalisation, but still, if you compare the general age of hardcore fans vs IDM or DnB or dubstep or breakbeat or (...), I doubt it will be the same.

4) I'd listen to dubstep for a whole night if the DJs are good and play a large variety of stuff. Since I prefer midtempo/downtempo music, I don't see anything wrong with it considering only "rules" of dubstep is that it's slower than most EDM and that it has a high emphasis on bass. But to be honnest, I probably won't spend one whole night listening only to the dubstep artists at Shamb. I'll spend a bit of time listening to psy in the labyrinth, and probably a lot of time at the beach, listening to the more chill-out stuff.

5) Well...this forum is not the only forum I visit, and I've seen more than once a Hardcore enthusiast start a new thread on a EDM forum only to be told by most people that it's the only genre of EDM they don't like...It even happened on the Shambhala forum. So I can assume that it wouldn't be to much of a good move for Shambhala to get hardcore djs.

6) Sure, could be better.

6) Honnestly, I totally agree with the fact that it could be nice to have a couple of hardcore DJs if it would please a part of the crowd. I don't like most house either but I can understand why there is some at the festival and I don't mind. The thing is that honnestly, there is not a lot of hardcore fans at Shamb. Simple as that.

Having hardcore in there would definitly fuck up the vibe, terrible idea

House is totally cool, most of the best tracks being made right now are in house music

Goes very well with breaks to, so its perfect :)

They should have even put more house and less dubstep if you ask me!

Good house can be great. But most of the time it's not good house I hear.

I agree that there is probably a bit too much dubstep, even though it's one of my favorite genre of EDM. But the thing is that less dubstep wouldn't have meant more house, since dubstep is in the village, and they wouldn't book house djs in the village.

I know the origins of edm (well not as well as u do, but better than nothing) host_one, i just think hiphop became its own music genre and gained enuf of its own following it would have its own festivals. To call it part of contemporary edm is a stretch imo. Seriously, when someone talks about genres of music - edm, classical, jazz, country, you consider hip-hop to be part of edm? Sure they have a common begining, but to me its like calling people the same as monkeys. Anyways, hardcore and hard dance don't have enuf of a following on their own to get their own festivals out west while hiphop does, so shouldn't they be given priority over hiphop at an edm festival? If they can do hip-hop and random entertainment shows and a ton of dub and a ton of breaks at shamb there is room for a couple sets of hard dance and hardcore. Hardcore it not my favorite type of muzik, but I wouldn't mind a set or 2. Hard dance on the other hand - nom nom nom. I definitely understand the arguement at the very least, especially when there's going to be dub playing simultaneously at 2+ stages this shambhala for hours at a time.

More house would be nice - it would fit ok at fractal I guess and maybe the rock pit

When people say there aren't many hardcore fans in BC....they mean it. In the 6-7 years I've been raving I've heard of 1...MAYBE 2 hardcore parties in BC. And at the one party I recall for sure it was largely oldskool/breakbeat hardcore and industrial. Nobody listens to anything faster than 150bpm in BC unless it's jungle. BC loves the funk, and hardcore no has the funk. Booking hardcore at Shambhala would make as much sense as booking Avril Lavigne at Ozzfest.

Now, if you think contemporary Hip Hop is not part of EDM, do yourself a favour and check out some of the following artists:

EdiT
Two Fingers
Lazersword
Oo-ah
Ill. Gates
TTC
An-ten-nae
Bassnectar
DJ Z-Trip
Glitch Mob (Who are playing piknic this year!)
Kraddy
Tipper
Otto Von Shirach (heh heh)
Modeselektor
Ghislain Poirier

etc. etc. yadda yadda

West Coast and East Coast just have different vibes. One of the reasons I came out here because I knew that I was never going to get booked or throw successful parties in BC playing hard techno/acid techno. I've kind of moved away from that sound now but still Montreal is more inclined towards that sort of vibe. The kids out here like faster music for sure. I think that's partly because people still do speed out here, whereas in BC amphetamines are looked down upon because of the devastation that crystal meth brought upon the scene, and also due to the fact that out there speed and meth are essentially synonymous to most people.

I think people should be bashing others saying they dont know what their talking abouty in "music knowledge" the people on this forum right now have all been in thhe rave scene as dj/producers /promotoers and such for years

Everyone does have their own tastes
But I said its at its weakest because i did recongnize alot of locals and new comers.
Its for that reason
IM NOT PAYING THE SAME PRICE AS LAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE FOR MORE LOCALS [woops caps]
and I dont think its a far fetched to feel that way

Deekline last year at wemf didnt play breakbeat but did glitchy electro.dub

Id rather see every friggin genre and a few of its subgenre for a electronic festival [ with the exception of eclipse]

headliner or not as well. its more of a value preference

cant compare bc parties. heck vancoyver and victoria are 2 different scenes in itself
cant even generalize the province as a whole either

honestly... i think it's a pretty phenomenal line up...
like c'mon???
look at these names!!!
i'd pay 20$ to see just about any of these guys individually..

Uberzone VS BASSBIN TWINS
Deekline
Malente
Fort KNOX 5
AC Slater
Nick Thayer
Beat Vandals
Deekline
Utah Saints
Ali B.
Bassnectar
Atomic Hooligan
Ill Gates (phat conductor)
Maestro Fresh Wes
Mat the Alien
Benga

I feel that the line up really reflects whats goin' on in electronic music TODAY.
not to mention the line up listed isn't even complete...
as sad as it is to say...
there are a lot of ppl in quebec that are ridiculously behind the times.
and i think that ppl's obsession with hardcore clearly reflects that.
like c'mon now...
even if you look at countries like england with huge hardcore and donk scenes..
those scenes are polluted with scum bags and degenerates.
it's dirty white trash music really.
like fuckin' hell...
what promoter in there right mind would want to attract that low calibre of ppl to there parties???
fuckin' crack heads chewing there face off, stealing, bumming change and walking around smelling like complete ass...
it's fuckin' trashy man.
and as much as there is a lot of sketchies running around b.c.
after working with so many van city heads over the years and getting to see what there scene is like first hand...
i really think that those west coast kids are doing a phenomenal job focusing on up and coming sounds rather than somehow getting stuck in 1996 (yet somehow not knowing anything of any origins before 2002??) and letting there scene stagnate and die off like it's doing here.
feel free to bitch me out, insult my taste or leave any sort of typical [ rave.ca ] comment slandering my mother or calling me a homo...
but what it comes down to is that these guys are doing a much better job representing electronic music than anybody on the east coast outside of Miami.
I'm feeling republican right now..

maybe you should check out DanceValley . The electronics scenes woodstock.
Most of the stages are organized by some of the biggest names out there.
The diversity is awesome
And I wouldnt consider if by any means white trash

I think your being un realistic comparing west coast scene/east coast scene/europes scene

You cant compare any of them to one another

Im going to Dance valley this year. I think its the best deal/experience thus far for 09

Funny murdock...I always thought it was the dnb and jungle scenes in toronto that attracted all the meth heads :P

Look...I totally understand if stage promoters at shamb don't want to play certain genres or they want to play what's trendy. Its fine; its their festival, not mine. I just don't think you need to trash the entire subgenre or say its beacuse no one at the festival wants it there. Its just as easy and more correct to simply say that the current stage promoters don't want to play those genres at this time.

I might be alone on this but I think a huge part of the difference in the scenes out west and out east is exposure. I don't think I've ever heard hardcore in calgary, and the only times I heard hard dance was when rodi sytle threw an event. I wasn't exposed to it until I came out east where you have a hardcore event atleast 1ce a month in toronto.maybe vancouver is different; I won't prentend to know. But...if ur not exposed to something, how do u know that you'll enjoy it or not? And if no one knows of it, there will be no events thrown or people who try to dj it and so it dies out. So you have one person saying "people explicitly don't want hard styles at shambhala," while I don't see it that way at all. The way I see it, Shambhala gets to act as a massive exposure tool out west; you'll be surprised how many people go to shambhala and end up loving something they were exposed to there for the first time. Like people who go for the breaks and come back loving bassline or go for the psy and come back loving dub. I think that's part of what make shambhala so amazing.

It would be nice if there was a bit of exposure to hardcore and hard dance at shambhala so people who have never been exposed to such genres can decide for themselves...shambhala draws 10 000+ people, mostly from alberta, BC and washington. I find it hard to believe that most of those attendees have been exposed to all genres of edm and have decided they primarily enjoy dub, dnb, breaks and psytrance. More likely than not, there's a positive feedback btwn what is played at shambhala and the genres that gain popularity in the scene out west.
I'm feeling so long dental plan right now..

Problem is, good luck attracting people who listen to any type of hard electronic music with a name like "Shambhala Music Festival".

Anyone who's not a musical expert who looks at the lineup and recognizes only a few names, will assume it's a psy event with a name like this. I know I would and it's safe to assume I wouldn't be the only one.

That's like throwing a noisecore event named " Aum Shanti ".
