sure all of you are right in a way, but then theres all those people who dont listen to music of certain type just because they think the style that goes with it sucks, or they heard a couple crap songs and base their opinions on those
as a hobbyist musicial, it is my opinion that there are good creations within any type of music. defining traits of that style can be either well used, nicely arranged in terms of melodies/beats/progressions etc, or they could be misused, overbearing, exemplifying everything that is NOT to like about the style (to people "outside" the fan circle of the style that is... fans tend to be very forgiving). i have my preferred types of music, but i can also listen to (almost) anything else and enjoy it if it is well made within the style that the track represents, or (which is often ever better) something original that doesnt fit into any of the more general descriptions we now have for music and/or encompasses bits of many. and while i understand that not liking certain music style after being well aware of what it is about may be warranted, denying all music just because it fits into a certain category sounds pretty close minded to me. |

dunno said:
"-dropping into 30 ft metal halfpipe with 2ft of vert on a $10 board without pads on and skinning yourself SUCKS -mustard sucks -paying $6 for an itty bitty cup of regular coffee because you're on the top of a mountain sucks -pay toilets in euro train stations suck" these are all very easy value judgements to make. the subject of your judgment is clear and well-defined. when someone dismisses an entire genre of music they are dismissing a huge body of material. it's really a very bold thing to do. in my mind, for someone to be justified in slagging an entire genre they had better know that genre very, very well or else they must be referring to such a restricted subsubsubsubsubgenre that there is virtually no room for self-expression or experimentation within it. otherwise i don't think they're really fit to make such a judgement. i don't have problems with someone preferring one genre over another or disliking the stylistic hallmarks of a particular genre, but saying something like "trance sucks" or "house sucks" doesn't go over well in my books. generally the person saying such a thing either doesn't understand the genre completely or isn't familiar with the entire scope of the material that the genre spans. i would consider such a person narrow and short-sighted, or maybe simply ignorant. i wouldn't dislike a person for thinking this way because most people do at some point (i know i did)....... but i wouldn't respect their point of view and might try to change it.. anyway i'm too silly a person for such a serious discussion. ;) but this is the way i feel |

i still believe i can say "i hate (insert music form here)"....it just makes sense to me i guess. My grampa hates loud fast music, therefor he can say without a doubt that he hates HHC(even without hearing many "subtypes")...unless you can find me some hhc that sounds like Enya, in which case ITS NOT HHC.
Each musical style, regardless of subtypes has a basic sound to it...like I love punk....happy punk, hardcore punk, punk with bagpipes, brit punk, punk punk punk....take out all the drums and guitars, change the lyrics (lets insert Enya sound again instead)....guess what, it's no longer punk, we just have more Enya! So how about we just say that all music is Enya, just in subsubsubsubsubsubsubsubsubsub forms and then no one will ever have their feelings hurt by anyone else. Enyalist Reprezentin!! |

Too many long posts...
any resumés of what's being said here? I'm reeeealy sorry, I just have no concentration right now. Am I missing something important? Are their just open minds here, or plenty of open things? My psycologist is open minded, does that count as a legit post? |
