The Bake is back
Steve Lalla slalla@hour.ca EZ Bakers (L to R): Kiffah, Dialect and DB Vaig Somewhere in the deep black of winter 2005, two bleary-eyed Plateau dwellers decided to make their dream a reality, launching a weekly club night that was virtually doomed to fail. Cold weather, Monday nights and weird half-tempo electronic music at the irreversibly doomed Bluedog could only result in disaster. Calling themselves EZ Bake, their decision to charge nothing at the door and to drown attendees in rivers of alcohol proved to be their fatal undoing: as word of the EZ Bakers' strange vibes spread throughout the city, it became clear that this project had taken on a life of its own... a life that would prove to be longer than that of Bran Van 3000. Four years down the road, dubstep has become internationally accepted, and at popular local club nights one can hear a rich potpourri of urban electronic beats that ranges, much like EZ Bake's ambitious menu of '05, from dubstep to d'n'b and jungle, breaks and electro. While London's Skream has become the Grandmaster Flash of the dubstep movement, many forget that weekend almost three years ago that The Dregs, EZ Bake and Beat Concierge first brought him here to perform for a handful of people at two tiny clubs. This week the Bake returns to Bluedog as Kiffah, DB Vaig and Dialect celebrate four years of creativity, conviviality and friendship with a free night of great breakbeat, dubstep, jungle, d'n'b and electro music, Monday, Feb. 16. "It still represents the 'fuck a nine-to-five workweek' type of attitude, you know," says Dialect, "extending the weekend into the beginning of the next week, Monday. After the original Bluedog closed down we were forced to experiment with different venues and different weeknights. We had a lot of ups and downs, but ultimately it made the team stronger and the name itself became an actual living thing. These days an EZ Bake can be experienced at any corner of the island, on any given weeknight." Going out of his way to clear up a common misconception, DB Vaig insists: "As much as people like to think that there is some nefarious drug reference to the name, truth be told, EZ Bake to us is more like 'no stress, no worries,' more of a mantra than a name for the crew." Dialect's best EZ Bake memory is a night that I too can vaguely recall: "October 31, 2005, EZ Bake Halloween party with Dark & Clark and Rhys Taylor," he recounts. "Everyone dressed up in ridiculous costumes, [and the] music was out of this world. Somehow, one guy [AD Malbon by nickname] managed to convince nearly everyone at the night to take a sip of his orange juice. Little did we know, his drink was heavily dosed with MDMA, and the night turned into this surreal e-tard party." What to expect from the 2009 edition of the Bake? "Musically I think we've all grown to be more versatile in genre-crossing and playing stuff we never used to a couple of years ago," concedes Dialect. "Not that our old nights were only breaks and jungle, but these days we dip more into dubstep and electro, hip-hop and funk, while keeping that driving breaks/jungle/d'n'b core throughout the night." Dialect, DB Vaig and Kiffah return to Bluedog, Monday, Feb. 16, for the four-year anniversary (approximately) of EZ Bake. ooo New York cut-and-paste electro/house producer Udachi is CTRL FRK's special guest at their grand opening Saturday night at Saphir. Weekly residents Dirty Licious, Axel Klein, Melodrastik and Dorian Gray bring dancefloor-friendly new school electro and sounds - as well as a deadly combination of youth and experience - for the masses.
