or, for that matter, the style of music played by the Dj.. which is often forgotten when putting together a line-up.

What I think could be awesome would be a setup similar to Q-Bet's Octagon... 4 setups for mixing (mixer/2 TTs/2 CDJs) on the 4 "long" faces of the table and 4 scratch-stations (Vestax PDX-2000+mixer/QFO) on the smaller "corners" of the octagon.. organise the DJs by BPM and have a massive tag-team mashup..

Sure, it could come out sounding like total crap, but it's also got the potential for really awesome shit if you get DJs that are good with phrasing..

yeah, if I ever become a millionaire, I'm having an Octagon room like at Q-Bert's place.. That table for mixing/scratching, and like sofas all around with TVs and game consoles and arcade machines and shit like that..

meh, Ive never been too interested in DJ-ing. I love DJs for what they do, and I could imagine its a total blast being up there when you have the crowd going nuts. And I love hearing wickid DJ sets cuz it makes the night that much better. But, it just wasnt for me.

I just love dancing the night away in my own little world in my favorite spot (center left of the DJ booth). I remember this one event where no one was dancing, and I was just chilling with some friends, and then I was like um "why ;is no one dancing?" So I went to my favorite spot and just kind of got lost dancing for what must have been a long while, cuz when I next looked around, the floor was packed.
I actually notice that a lot; no one wants to dance until the floor is somewhat full.
I'm feeling in love ^__^ right now..

To be honest, the appeal of being a DJ for me is simply getting the chance to explore new music, and making my own mixes. Sure, the idea of playing in front of crowd, and getting everyone hyped up and shaking their asses, also has it's appeal, but that's just not my style. I'm just too timid.

When I was 13, I would get all my brother's hip-hop tapes, and CD's, and sit I'd in front of my stereo for hours listening to the music, analyzing the sound, and making my own mix tapes. It was a hobby of mine. I would then take those mix tapes, and get my bus driver to play them during the ride to school (often times to the chagrin of some of the passengers... But whatever, whoever doesn't dig GZA, and Raekwon can suck my dick). But it would feel pretty good to see some people bobbing their heads, or asking "who made that song" once we got off the bus. However, I didn't make those mix tapes for them, or to get attention. I made them for myself, and decided to share them with others in hopes of finding common ground, I guess.

Ultimately what I'm getting at is that being a DJ isn't necessarily about having an ego trip (which I'm sure is understood by everyone here). Sure you can get the few douche bags who want to get behind the decks, so they can press play, and throw their arms in the air like they were Jesus Christ, or something. Most of the time when I "DJ", it's me and some friends who will just sit around a huge collection of music, and we'll each pick three songs, and do a rotation. It's not about: "who picks the dopest tracks" or "My track is better than yours"... even though that can be fun at times. It's about the music, and creating a vibe.

Once I get into my own place, the first investment I'm going to make is to buy myself some turntables, and a mixer. Not because I have aspirations to play at some bar night. Just because I want to feel like that 13 year old kid again, sifting through music, making my own mixes. And maybe every once in awhile... I'll throw my arms up the air and pretend I'm playing in front of a crowd of a thousand people.
I'm feeling cool right now..

Any DJ who says he doesn't do this when no one is around is a LIAR.

I never even bothered to throw my hands up in the air when I did play in front of thousands of people... why would I do it at home?

As for setting up an Octagon...

we've done a mini-version at my place... we've 'only' got seven turntables and three mixers though... so it's not quite the same.

It's been a long time since I've MCed. It was pretty easy. I was MC M.C. - which was short for MC Mute Cripple. I sat in a chair, with a microphone in my lap and didn't say anything. I'd call for the rewind by falling out of my chair... the rewind affords the DJ the time necessary to help me back into my chair.

It was a protest against the MCs that jump around too much and never stop talking.

I've run across a couple of good MCs... the Bacon Manager is a prince, and Doormouse does a good job of hyping the crowd up.
