Quote from Alex:

"I will physically kill somebody for a ticket to see Coldplay.

That's right, if there is some person out there whose discontinued existence would vastly improve your life, but you are having trouble with the moral or spiritual implications of killing them yourself, I will do it for you in exchange for a chance to hear "Clocks" live and in person."

"I'm so forward, I have the latest freshest tunes, if its not forward its not worth my precious time, omg, look a me I play dubstep, oh I'm forward, please come to my night and hear me spin, please!"

i dunno man... i didnt come up with that line ("its not worth my precious time")... we just changed it acctually... I didnt really like it and yeah, it does sound a bit pretentious (although I know that the person who came up with it did not mean it like that)

honnestly i'm not really throwing the night so people come see me spin... which is why i always do the opening... the point of the night is really just to showcase the guest djs (and mcs and live act)...

regardless... you're right though, I still do have lots to learn about djing... for sure! thats part of what i love about throwing the night, I get to see so many djs spin in so many different ways! its just nutz what someone can do with two turntable and a few volume switches...

The more I learn the more I realize how little I know... djing is infinite, you can never stop learning

Before I ever touched turntables, I used to play sax; jazz/big band/blues/improv.... I haven't played sax ever since I started dj'ing, thats how addicted I became. For some people its a hobby, for others its a profession, either way for many it can become an obsession....

My name is Nicholas and I'm a Dj'holic

true!

I think we're lucky in Montreal though... what I know of it anyways... it seems a vast majority of the djs around me are truly there quite simply because they are passionate about music... I keep meeting truly inspiring people at every turn of my life and I feel that I am no where near being done meeting truly inspiring people... something to look forward to in this new year!

i love what i do, but the politics of it really sucks alot....Especially if u r resident here or there alot of places there is alot of drama. I prefer not to get into it. I just come in mix get paid ( if i do get paid) and leave.....it is a hobbie for me even though i am pro and have been mixin a long time but it is just so hard to get noticed u know.

But i keep doing what i love and makes me happy and if it makes others happy fantastic i do my thing and that's it.....And i am happy that i have a good ear for music and some people to enjoy my mixing.......

i guess when the scene is weak, no one wants to participate...some of us stuck through it all though, and here we are :P

it's weird though, i don't like the idea that everyone becomes a DJ (usually it creates problems with competition and drama and bullshit and no one gets booked often enough since there's too much choice), but at the same time, i think the perfect party would be one where everyone IS a dj, so there would be a total understanding and a sense of brotherhood/sisterhood - and everyone would get their turn on the decks. but that's just a dream :P

The advent of Serato/Traktor/Torq helps to 'dilute' things a lot more these days.. CDJs also to an extent, but they still require more "investment" in getting/burning CDs and having to flip through a CD book.. These days, anyone with a set of turntables, Vinyl Emulation program and an internet connection can play absolutely anything and just search their whole collection.. It's an asset in the right hands, for sure.. But when you get hipster DJs who just want to play the latest electro tracks they read about on some blog while wearing '80s cliché' fashion, it's fucking horrible..

It's currently the best and worst time to be a DJ.. Those with the real dedication and love for music have amazing tools at their disposal, but these same tools are making it so much easier for wannabe-rockstars to pretend they're the real deal when they couldn't beatmatch with two copies of the same track on quartz-lock.

As for the 'all-dj' party, man I can only see that going horribly, horribly wrong. You have no idea how many local DJs think they're 'The Shit' (NOT looking at Bliss) that will bitch and moan about timeslots at a free party that no one is getting payed for that's supposed to be done 'for fun' to the point where they'll just threaten/say that they won't show up/play the party if they don't have the exact time-slot they want..
I'm feeling your norks right now..

that's exactly how i feel... like it's cool, but it's not cool :P (elaborating that thought would take too long)...

for the all-dj party, my vision is utopian like i said, i wasn't necessarily thinking of MTL djs, just in general...and in a party where we would all be there the whole time, day or night, to be fair and open to other djs (and i'd expect all those not mixing to be dancing). but you're right, realistically, with the attitude of many peops, it would be a fuckin' mess...

yeah, a REAL colab party with considerate people would be fuckin' amazing as hell.. But man, way too many people would need to check their ego at the door, we'd end up with 5 people mixing happily and everyone else bitching about wanting to play the "peak" hour..

well... the one place where I saw no care for peak hours was on a boat... the party starts when you set sail and ends when you're back to port... no one plays to an empty room (or deck for that matter) so basically the only thing differentiating the first set from the last one is how inebriated the crowd is...
