Yeah, fuck that Mac crap, it all seems much better now.

Neo, my posts were as annoying as all the Mac fanboys I speak to on a weekly basis who are ADAMANT you need a Mac for graphics design and music, as if the MACHINE determined your overall ability for creation. That's ludicrous. The stuff you create will be just as good regardless of what goddam platform you use.

I just get off the wagon when some people I know laugh at me because I prefer Windows when OS X is, quote, "so much easier to use, and so much more stable than XP. My Mac NEVER crashes and I never get a virus" and blah blah blah and so on and oh how so special you are with your overfuckingpriced Mac Air.

I for one totally agree that an OS is a friggin' OS and who the fuck cares what company made it but as long as it suits your needs.

In fact, I'm glad to see you can get as much trouble with a Mac than a PC apparently.

But point taken, I sort of hijacked that thread and I'm sorry.

On that note, any new developments Alex ?

You're really sold on Windows eh? Why is it always a choice? Tbere are uses for both OSes and the discussions are mac-related. What, an old mac breaks down and you have to jump on it and be like "SEE! SEE! I TOLES YOU GUYZ! LULZ!!" It's pretty pathetic.

Are you going to tell a new computer buyer that they should get a fucking Vista-bundled PC at this time? Have you been to a computer store lately? Utter crap except for the mac section. My friend got a brand new Toshiba laptop because he hates Macs too, what happens? We get some kind of Vista install error after a bit of use, requiring a reinstall using a disc they never gave us, because they're supposed to work out of the box. Three times. Each time he exchanged it for the same model, same problem. So he exchanged it for a better computer, and a similar problem popped up. Non stop. Vista is so annoying, I can't understand the appeal.

I won't say anything positive about Mac so that you don't decide to rage on me as well over something so trivial. Really man, it's a computer, some people prefer them, you don't, big deal! No need to start ranting about the superiority of one or the other! Although honestly I don't know why it's a question.

Fuck all those people who buy paint too, you can make great art by stabbing yourself and drawing with blood.

Host try taking out one of the ram sticks or the other, bad ram can completely fuck a system up.. seen it happen on numerous computers (mac and pc)

lukeperil's mac got all fucked up and it still works fine, internal HD was fucked up including the sata connectors on the board from traume and you can still boot the computer from a firewire disk and use it fine, a wintel pc would have been toast.

Yeah have you done the Parameter RAM reset? Start up and hold down p, r, command, and option. It should restart after that with a slightly louder startup sound. You can also try moving the RAM around or checking if it's loose, it might not be fucked after all.

fuck macs, fuck ibms, i prefer ALPHA or SUN stations , IMMERSA desks or my old atari st or 2600.

okay booting from 8 different os, i can say that if you choose to go towards one or an other,

they will all have different features and slickness of humping the machine. i use software that

is portable from anymachine on earth uness it doesnt run on power.

a vista station will fuck up as quick without software machine specific patching and customising, as

a mac will do if you install byte tyran and get on the p2p network everyday, then browse free6 for

6 or 8 hours. COMPUTERS ARE NEVER SAFE, ANYTHING AGAINST THIS STATEMENT IS PURELY COMPLACENT

BEHAVIOUR AND A COMPLETE IGNORANCE TOWARDS "ON TOP" OF PARTITION VIRUS (IE MACHINE JMP), NOT YOUR

AVERAGE I DELETE YOUR BOTTON OF YOUR RESUME IN OFFICE. NO THIS IS SOMETHING ELSE.

I will agree with luke the problem is that most stores have soo much rent overhead they will do

anything for -ALL- your money. i heard to manytime someone that went to a store and got billed a

200$ to get all his data wiped and no backup, getting told they are replacing the hd, when they keep

it to themselves , stealing ram... etc..

whats more frustrating is that i hardly can get payed more than 20$ and im fucking clear honest about

what goes on, and ordered special coverters from far east just to be 100% forensic for the next 20

years or more. on top those same folks dont come and see me they opt to get fuck instead... pathetic.

how can ANY descision be relavent afterwards about them using their computers...

Lukeperil, did you not read and understand this : "I for one totally agree that an OS is a friggin' OS and who the fuck cares what company made it but as long as it suits your needs" ?

I in no way shape or form prefer Windows over OS X, that's the whole point. It's the retards I constantly talk to that are trying to tell me that "Macs are far superior for graphics design and music production and it's so much easier to use" combined with the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads on TV that make it look like PCs are only used for business purposes like for Excel spreadsheets and such and only Macs cater to your artistic needs.

I was just objecting to those who keep telling me Photoshop is so much better on a Mac. It's the same fucking thing.

I couldn't care less what type of computer anybody uses for music production, as long as the result is kick ass beats.

Anyway, enough hijacking, I'm out of this thread already. :)

hmm well if you are doing serious graphics stuff the colour profiling is a lot better on the mac (most people here probably don't care about that stuff). But I honestly think the people who will benefit the most from the system are the ones who do the simple stuff like email/word/browsing because it is harder to get viruses.

I did a lot of 'repair' work for people and the stuff I had to do for windows users was usually wiping the hd and reinstalling windows and installing firefox and telling people to only use that. Hell I would install ubuntu linux if only there were versions of the programs people want like itunes or whatever available for it. Those people who use their computers for email/word/browsing seem to seriously fuck up stuff and they would benefit from a Mac or Linux (if it gets more software support).

When I was working with Mac users it was usually more interesting problems like setting up a fancy wide-format printer or hooking them up with equipment for video editing, or dealing with an esoteric networking issue. The basic stuff wouldn't mess the system up. The hardware can fail like any computer.

The technical people would be fine with any system. I went for a mac when they switched to intel and let you run windows on it. Now I can run any windows, OS X, or linux program on the same computer. I can run logic, final cut, and have adobe audition running in a vm, open a linux vm or multiboot to whatever OS I want native. Worth the money for that.

Damn ScottyP, you have the best of both world... and more.

As for what you mentioned, I have to agree, although people's general knowledge of computers (or lack thereof) is usually at least partially to blame for stuff that doesn't work anymore on their computers.

I mean, clicking on the "Win a free iPod" banner is NEVER a good thing regardless of what type of OS you use. Heh.

wormwood [ en.wikipedia.org ]
leap [ en.wikipedia.org ] etc..

shit do you even deal or know macro-assembly ? or do you just feed the interpretator ?

NOTHING IS SAFE -

you know google chrome ? are you aware that a machine running it can execute arbitrary code
from a remote buffer overflow attack ?

phrack as pretty good overflows hacks
switching from userland to root environment.

[ secunia.com ]
more overflow

then there are also sms's

christ even phones :
Common mobile viruses

Cabir: Infects mobile phones running on Symbian OS. When a phone is infected, the message 'Caribe' is displayed on the phone's display and is displayed every time the phone is turned on. The worm then attempts to spread to other phones in the area using wireless Bluetooth signals.

Duts: A parasitic file infecter virus and is the first known virus for the PocketPC platform. It attempts to infect all EXE files in the current directory (infects files that are bigger than 4096 bytes)

Skulls: A trojan horse piece of code. Once downloaded, the virus, called Skulls, replaces all phone desktop icons with images of a skull. It also will render all phone applications, including SMSes and MMSes useless

Commwarrior: First worm to use MMS messages in order to spread to other devices. Can spread through Bluetooth as well. It infects devices running under OS Symbian Series 60. The executable worm file once launched hunts for accessible Bluetooth devices and sends the infected files under a random name to various devices.

if you can install an os in a computer you can hack that os. only when you will remove all input and
output this machine will be "safer" but not safest.

about leap again..

The Leap or Oompa-Loompa computer virus is an application-infecting, LAN-spreading worm for Mac OS X discovered in February 2006.

Leap cannot spread over the Internet, and can only spread over a local area network reachable using the Bonjour protocol. On most networks this limits it to a single IP subnet.

if you combine this with a userland escalation from a jpg macro cokie attack

you mac is pretty much , fucked.

if you want serious, you then INJECT code into the loading process, you can hide the data into
that aforemention cookie, then reupdate the cookie, forking the code at a physical reserve space
on disk structure, then good luck, only a low level format can save you

this doesnt impress me. but you said u were if we named one . had more than your bargain, u impressed now :D

as of now, my only security is using unknowed code, or stuff that less than .000000000002% percent ppl know about, then that leave me with a circle of .000000000002% ppl that can
fuk me over compared to the broad softwares.

i run a laptop with dos 6.22/xp pro/backtrack3(slax)/openbsd4.4/aros(current)/plan9(last)/inferno(current)/bsd4.3(pdp virtual core, standalone pdp virtualisation - no emulators)

this i how i can contour the attacks, but i know its all shit if someone else knows how they are
setup, and what i run, even if i plug it into anything else than a power outlet.

computer = house (you can always break in)

everything you named is either not for OSX, is a trojan, or buffer overflow vulnerabilities. I was talking about viruses. Buffer overflows exist in every single piece of software written in C and C++ for any/all operating systems. Very rarely are they tied to the operating system however, they're usually in the software people run on the computer.

OSX is inherently more secure than any version of Windows.

I can fuck up any computer with a hammer to, or by taking parts out of it.. :|

Ok. About the viruses:

Oompa-Loompa:

You cannot be infected by this unless you do all of the following:

1) Are somehow sent (via email, iChat, etc.) or download the "latestpics.tgz" file

2) Double-click on the file to decompress it

3) Double-click on the resulting file to "open" it

...and then for non-Admin users, it fails to infect most applications.

You cannot simply "catch" the virus. Even if someone does send you the "latestpics.tgz" file, you cannot be infected unless you unarchive the file, and then open it.

A few important points

-- This should probably be classified as a Trojan, not a virus, because it doesn't self-propagate externally (though it could arguably be called a very non-virulent virus)

-- It does not exploit any security holes; rather it uses "social engineering" to get the user to launch it on their system

-- If you're not running as an admin user, it will silently fail to infect most applications

-- It doesn't actually do anything other than attempt to propagate itself via iChat, and then only via Bonjour! (aka "Rendezvous) -- it does not sent itself over the Internet, rather just to your local Bonjour user list

-- It has a bug in the code that prevents it from working as intended, which has the side-effect of preventing infected applications from launching

-- It's not particularly sophisticated

--I'd really be tempted to call this thing a non-event; it's poorly written, can't spread beyond your local network, is unlikely to infect anything on most machines, and needs user interaction to do anything at all--

Dude, get it in your head, a VIRUS is something you can get by simply having your computer on. This is CLEARLY a trojan and is clearly the fault of the user. If you run unknown executable code as an administrator and it fucks your system, it's your own goddamn fault, it's not a flaw in the operating system. GET IT?
