Truckers are not that great if you're a girl.. by yourself.. seriously.. my worst experiences hitchicking were with truckers..
the good thing about hitchiking when you're a girl is that people have either pity, or they kinda think that their own little girl could be out there. I still do it once in a while but never ever again in a winter storm :1 4 hours thinking I'm gonna freeze to death.. stuck in the middle of nowhere with a snowboard.. not such a great idea hehe
I'm feeling w00t! right now.. |

hmm seriously i've done montreal-toronto and back countless times with truckers and never had any troubles. no troubles either going to halifax or nelson...
just smooooth long rides from one big city to another. most of them just want someone to talk to, being alone so much on the road gets boring... and they even sometimes relay me to another trucker with their walkie-talkie thing... one thing i've been told and can tell you as well is this; don't get in with pakistanese-looking people, or indian, or something along those lines. not to be racist or anything but... i've just heard too many weird stories, and almost was in one of them.. they're looking for young girls to marry lol ;) Update » AYkiN0XiA wrote on Thu Oct 30, 2008 @ 7:55pm out of curiosity; how much is the greyhound from montreal to ottawa?
i know going to toronto one way bought on the same day of leaving cost me 90$ last time... no student card or anything...
I'm feeling meeeeow right now.. |

Hey Bliss you know what i did this one time. I bought a via rail ticket half way and then removed the tag they put above your head, so I went the full way.
Cuz they only put the tag above your head if your not going to the final destination. It saves a bundle. Just dont get caught...
I'm feeling empty right now.. |

I personally met lots of Pakistanis and Indian immigrants back in Hamilton who were suuuuper cool and very enlightened and down to earth. the one Indian grovery store I used to buy Samosas at - think it's called Maharajah - best in Hamilton - the lady who who ran it offered to teach me how to cook her recipes right there in the store. her son was this righteous Hindu dude who was fasting for world peace. really chill guy Indians are mad cool. I'd be more wary of rednecks. some of the most intolerant, unedcated, unpredictable people I've met have fallen into that category there's good and bad everywhere. racism is wack /politically correct post Update » recoil wrote on Sat Nov 1, 2008 @ 2:56am hehe - it's also a tad ironic for someone with the user name Namaste to be wary of "Indian-looking people" as the word and concept of "Namaste" originated in... India!!

I'd be more wary of rednecks. some of the most intolerant, unedcated, unpredictable people I've met have fallen into that category there's good and bad everywhere. racism is wack /politically correct post i know... i don't like the sound of it either that's why i said 'not to be racist or anything...' but i've just been talking to a lot of hitchikers in festivals all around quebec and ontario, and the numbers of those bad experience with that nationnality of people is quite elevated. there are a lot of them who are truckers and i don't know why it's like that or anything - man it's just not safe, they spend the whole ride harrassing you to be their wife. i don't say all of them are like that - i've been picked up by a pretty cool indian dude once who even gave me a hindi cassette to listen back home (though i have a hard time with those ultra high-pitched female voices). and i meet tons of cool indian people all the time actually, i love to party with them at clubs and they tell me about goa. that is not the point though. i'm just talking basic hitchikers safety here. there IS a high number of incidents that have happened with those people... and especially around toronto, hamilton, sarnia, etc. i don't say don't go with them. i just say be very cautious. analyze the kind of person you get in with - you should be doing that anyways, but almost all the incidents i've heard include that nationality. like someone asking for for a whole two hours if you have a boyfriend and why you're not with them and if you're married and if you like them and if you want to marry them and go to india and if they can see what is in your bag, etc etc etc... and i love india and the people. i just don't like THAT. namaste :) oh, and i'd be more worried about rednecks if i was hitching in the states... but i've already been warned not to do that at all... hookers at truckstops, everyone carrying guns and actually shooting, etc... apparently the west-coast is safe though, and it's not too bad in the adirondaks either.
