but please don't go around saying that if someone have a disability or something different than the fucking arian race they should be remove because they are polluting the gene pool.

anyway WHO FUCKING CARE ABOUT THE GENE POOL??!! not me.

and i really don't need religion to think that is wrong.

See, I said/mentioned that because someone else brought up that we should be evolving, and if you know anything about how evolution works, you would know what natural selection is, and survival of the fittest/natural selection dictates that the weak and helpless die, and the strong and resoursfull live and become prosperous.

It's simple fact that people pass their genes on to their children, and if people who have genetic problems are allowed to reproduce, then we get more and more stupid and retarded people, people that need extra/special care, people who can't really be usefull to anyone.

If we're going to evolve any more, we have to take a step back and let nature take it's course, and that means medical science has to be pushed aside, which is never going to happen.
I'm feeling like cheezing right now..

betty, i understand but you have to look at it by a 3rd point of view. like if you were not human.

lets do a situation. humans are not alone in space right?

so lets say there is an alien race coming to earth, and wants to invade us, they are not friendly.

what are the humans suposed to do, its every counrty for themselves? or its humans vs ets?

and we have a limited capacity of people we can have on earth, if we are stuck with 10,20,30,50% of people being "disabled" and not beeing able to fight, what happens?

were screwed.

survival of the fittest should be the only way to be. but, we are not. we are trying to save everyuone even if on the long time run it will cost more energy/food/air/whatever we are using to survive, for people who wont be able to bring much to the humans,

stephen awkins hasa great mind, he ccan bring things to the humans, but a person on the verge of death whocant mode talk or do shit cant, but still, we fight to keep them alive, why?

Yeah, exactly. It's a way of life we've decided to take and the way we'll keep on living. Until we can be grafted cyberware and our consciousness is transfered to a computer, of course :D

Until that day, we have to accept that we have purposely stopped our evolution. I personally don't see it as "a mistake"; simply something that happened and not much we can do today about it unless we start WW3 with nukes everywhere and the survivors have to rely on Dark Ages principles to continue living.

wow i sooooooooo disagree with you guys!!

1- first, you are talking here about social darwinism, not natural selection or evolution. and i don't believe at all in social darwinism. sorry! there's a difference between social darwinism and natural selection. natural selection is a fact. but social darwinism is a belief system with no facts to back it up.

2- often the cripple that you mention cannot even fucking reproduce so they aren't really participating into the "gene pool".

3- i believe that humane society who fonction at his best in history are the one were human were working together.

4- i don't believe at all that compassion to an other human being or an animal have contributing to weakened the "gene pool" or human species or what else. there is no such thing as proof of that at all.

5- and last... (i don't say here that you are an authentic nazi)... but nazi were doing propaganda with the same kind of idea about evolution, weak, cripple and else. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? THEY LOST THE FUCKING WAR! i think it's being a selfish loser to think like that. and if you wanna be a loser, be my guest. ha!

A lot of what you guys are saying is what I would consider "ableist" as in, prejudice based on ability. The idea that there is a norm that deserves to survive more than others is a misinterpretation of Darwin. Survival of the fittest is not the only rule, adaptability is also a crucial element to survival. Hence if someone with any sort of phsyical or mental disadvantage still manages to survive despite the odds against them, they are proving that humans (and probably a lot of other life forms) are infinitely resourceful and adaptable. This is why we have so many minutae of difference between individuals, we are all evolving differently. Like it or not, intelligence and physical health are not the be all and end all of survival and evolution and to think so is rather narrow minded. It's all good to be bitter at the hand you've been dealt but it's mostly pathetic, we're here to work through our challenges and come out better, that's how we evolve, not by culling the herd every time people feel that things are wrong.

Many of the biggest problems in the world are coming from active choices from people who assume they're superior to others and probably believe that they have the right to say who should and who shouldn't represent humanity. To express opinions like you guys are makes you all look hateful and ignorant. As Jacko says, if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. Pffft hehehe... still it's pretty much true. Just don't like, replace your face with a new one, that's taking it a bit too literally there, MJ, take note...

WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM, BITCH? :)
IT WAS BY NO MEANS A NEGATIVE SUGGESTION.. I WAS THINKING MORE ALONG THE LINES OF THE POSSIBILITY OF DISTANCING ONE SELF PHYSICALLY FROM IMPOSED ADVERSE VALUES IF YOU ARE IN SUCH UTTER CONTEMPT.. EXAMPLE: A PORTION OF MY FAMILY FLED GERMANY IN 1936 BECAUSE OF CONTRASTING OPINIONS ON THE POLITICAL STATE THAT WOULD BECOME FULL FLEGED NAZI GERMANY, NOT TO MENTION THEY SURVIVED LONG ENOUGH TO TRANSMIT IDEALS TO SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS WHO MIGHT TAKE BETTER ADVANTAGE IN TIME. PART OF BEING A SUCCESSFUL IS KNOWING WHEN YOU ARE OUTNUMBERED (HE WHO FIGHTS AND RUNS AWAY LIVES TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY) THIS EXPANDS ACROSS PLACE AS WELL AS TIME. I MUST ADMIT THAT AFTER ALL RECENT DOCUMENTATION I'M A BIT SURPRISED THAT THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO STILL HAVE HIGHER RICHEOUS EXPECTATIONS OF SOCIETY IN GENERAL AND ARE STILL STARTLED BY EVENTS MUCH LIKE THE ONE MENTIONED IN THE FIRST POST. THE WORLD IS A SMALL PLACE.. AND HOME IS OUT THERE. ITS A MATTER OF INTEREST AND ENERGY IN FINDING IT AND AWARENESS ASIDE, I LIKE TO THINK THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT UNDERSTAND COMPROMISE AND SACRIFICE WITH A MORE NOBLE APPROACH THAN THE CURRENT COUCH HERO GRADE. BITCH.

PWNED!!!!!

I can't imagine why you're being this aggressive about it. It's an opinion like any others. One I'm not trying to impose on you, by the way. But let's go over your points.

1- first, you are talking here about social darwinism, not natural selection or evolution. and i don't believe at all in social darwinism. sorry! there's a difference between social darwinism and natural selection. natural selection is a fact. but social darwinism is a belief system with no facts to back it up.

There are no facts to back it up simply because we haven't tried it. I don't think it would be right to try it but nonetheless, that's the only reason "we don't have facts to back it up." The only times it's been "started", it was bloody and disgusting. Again, I don't think it's a good idea with the societal system we have.

2- often the cripple that you mention cannot even fucking reproduce so they aren't really participating into the "gene pool".

That is untrue on so many levels.

3- i believe that humane society who fonction at his best in history are the one were human were working together.

Yes, because it's the only "humane society" we've ever had. I am not sure it would apply if we've had a comparison with other forms of civilization.

4- i don't believe at all that compassion to an other human being or an animal have contributing to weakened the "gene pool" or human species or what else. there is no such thing as proof of that at all.

But there is. Evolution happens with a drastic change in our environment. By this, I mean that in a condition which would normally kill a good population of a set of living beings, some will develop an immunity (an evolution) and move on. This happens all the time. Humans with flus, rats with diverse diseases, etc. When you stifle, or render continuous an environment, there is no room for change.

5- and last... (i don't say here that you are an authentic nazi)... but nazi were doing propaganda with the same kind of idea about evolution, weak, cripple and else. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? THEY LOST THE FUCKING WAR! i think it's being a selfish loser to think like that. and if you wanna be a loser, be my guest. ha!

The fact that the Germans lost the war has nothing to do with evolution theory. It's simple, military tactics applied by axis versus allies. Had Germany been a bigger country prior to the war, things would have been different. Had Hitler been Russian and had the Russians gone through the same, misguided thought process, we'd be living in a very different world today.

Finally, how is thinking about outcomes of evolution related to being a loser? You might not agree to it and it's not like I'll ever act upon it but it's only a theory (and will always remain so) and theories are meant to be thought about, philosophized and argumented about. Name-calling is childish. Had we stopped thinking as soon as someone deems us inferior for having "out of box" thoughts, we'd still think that the Earth is flat and that the sun revolves around it.

I think you're getting too personal with this, Betty.
Update » DCRn wrote on Fri Apr 25, 2008 @ 7:06pm
I agree with what you're saying, LukePeril. As I've said, we've exchanged one way of evolution to another. Technological advances permit us now to survive disease that used to decimate entire populations a thousand years ago.

We ARE cunning and I think I realize now what Betty and I are conflicting about. I'm in no way saying that "evolution" is forever stifled; I'm stating that the gene pool is stagnant. As far as species go, we've reached the maximum, except for immunities and life expectancy.

Our intellect, however, permits us to evolve in other ways. Through the use of machinery and technology. Which I'm all for. But it's too soon to be anything extravagant.

It all merits a more intelligent discussion than this odd sort of strange superiority complex everyone is pushing. If we wound up totally without infrastructure I'm hard pressed to believe a bunch of desk-jobbing IT nerds are going to last over a week, so saying all this stuff about natural selection yadda yadda is like saying you hope you get killed off. I'm hard pressed to accept that any of us is better equipped to survive natural selection than that nebulous "them" that we're all hoping will expire and disappear. It's just not realistic.

One thing I have to disagree with, about Screwhead's comment, is the role of religion in this. Christianism was a big push towards this theory. In the Middles Ages, for instance, the mentally ill had no place in the society. They were relegated to being the village idiot. Traits seen "counter-evolutive" were forcefully stopped and deemed evil; notions like this perdured until very recently. Just remember that in Quebec, up until a decade or two, left-handed people were seen as "inferior" and forced to adapt to writing with the right hand.

In royalty, it was even worse. They bred amongst themselves to keep the "superior" bloodline of the nobles. They were so set into their beliefs that they failed to see the irony of inbreeding.

Now, they didn't call it "evolution" and didn't see it the same way Darwin saw it but it was nonetheless the same type of behavior/thought. Maybe other religions were different but as far as Christianism (and more importantly Catholicism) was concerned, the "chosen" people touched with "God's Grace" were highly seen and privileged and the rest was muck.
