If you need a gun in order to feel safe... It's rifle only here in Canada, but still:
[ www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca ] But yeah, I'd actually have to disagree with you on this one, Betty. As liberal as I am (mind you, perhaps not as libertarian), I think the rightful use of force should belong with, and only with, the government. Assuming, of course, that the government is accountable to the people. Too many things can go horribly wrong when people actually have the means to use force against someone else, such as it is if there's not some form of control over that force (such as laws controlling the use of deadly weapons, who gets to use 'em and why). We're way past the concept of self-defense here, which is moot anyway if the government is the sole user of force. ... Yeah, not sure I should post this, I'm bound to get flamed for this one ;)

I've always liked to read what you have to say Betty, especially when it comes to highly political debates and this is honestly the first time I am in total disagreement with you. I guess we can't agree all the time. Before we get mutually very pissed off I think we should call it quits on this one. Or at least I should cuz I know I can get real pissed off real fast... i thought the same as you on that question when i was a teen. probably because of the kind of parents and education i have.
since then, let's say i emancipate myself. i don't have problems being around people or having friends who think otherwise than me. until it promote hate or step into my liberties, i don't have much problems with anyone and i'm not pissed off easy. ;)

Well I have a tendency to explode without warning and I'm trying to keep it under control when I know something might make me turn into the hulk.
When I first wrote my reply I was all pissed off and shit. So I decided to go chill a bit before hitting post. I'm glad I did, cuz we would still be running in circles and I'm pretty sure at some point I woulda really pissed you off too as hard as that might be.

Masa the problem is what you wrote could become this if you give the government too much power:
I think the rightful use of FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION should belong with, and only with, the government. Assuming, of course, that the government is accountable to the people. Too many things can go horribly wrong when people actually have the means to use FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION against someone else, such as it is if there's not some form of control over that FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION (such as laws controlling the use of deadly WORDS, who gets to use 'em and why).

Don't put words in my mouth... Freedom of speech and freedom to use deadly force are two very different things :)
I never implied giving the government more power. I'm saying the right to use force should remain, as it as pretty much always been, with some form of higher authority. Hell, even hardcore anarchists believe in some form of consensus among people in order to dictate right from wrong.

I understand that some people think this way but I think its fucking stupid and irresponsible to have liberty symbolised by somthing that kills people... for fucks sake, whats next, "HEY a nuclear bomb is a representation of my liberty so I should have the right to own one, who are you to tell me i cant own a nuclear bomb!"
