 Coolness: 77430 | It is not ok, no matter where you are, to assume that your language is superior or to be an asshole to people who are having a hard time speaking/writing/reading it. The crux of the problem is communication, not whose language wins, or these judgments of people based on their ability to learn. There are people in the world who can only speak one language, often because they're challenged by other languages. Some of the people in that category are bigots and can't stop telling people to speak their language, probably because they're afraid that people are talking shit about them, but often because they've been in one part of the world for too long. Some of them have genuine learning disabilities or feel too much prejudice towards their accents and give up. But nobody has the right to enforce language on others, and I think that extends to the right to label people as "anglos" or "frenchies" or whatever derogatory terms you want to throw at the infamous "other".
Mon père est Québecois, né à Rouyn-Noranda. A deux ans ou quelque chose ses parents ont choisi d'émenager a Ontario, ou ils ont démeuré a Sturgeon Falls, une ville qui était un des plus violents à Canada, pis une des plus racistes. Alors après quelques années d'abus general il avait presque peur d'exprimer en Français, mais il a fait un effort de garder ses racines et son langue. Alors quand j'était jeune, ma soeur pis moi ont fait de l'immersion français, a Toronto. Une moitié de la journée en Français, la deuxième en Anglais. J'ai pris les courses en Français jusqu'au 11eme année d'école secondaire, et je le trouvait bien difficile. Ce n'est pas typique que les gens des provences principalement Anglophones prennent si beaucoup des leçons en Français. C'etait pas la seule langue que je parle autant Anglais, parce-que ma mère est Allemande, et en vérité c'est ça ma deuxième langue. Ca fait que la Français est ma troisième. C'est ben difficile de parler trois langues, et assez bien et fluent, sans confuser tes mots. Alors c'était chiant mes premières années à Montréal d'avoir les gens qui me criticisait pour mes difficultés avec les dialects regionales. Les Quebecois que j'ai rencontré étaient toujours beaucoup plus ignorants à propos de ça que les Français, mais les deux m'ont souvent traité comme un con parce je démeure ici et j'ai pas des expressions parfait ni la vocabulaire de quelqu'un né dans la culture. Ben, je ne suis pas capable de voir un raison pour choisir de m'éxprimer avec un accent Québecois (que je trouve tellement laide en géneral, vous avez des voix des canards) ni un accent super-posh et chauvin de France. Je comprends mieux l'accent Français, mais les expressions comme "c'est gallaire (sic?)" sont terrible, pis les Québecois... pourquoi y a t'il de monde qui dit "ben kin"? What the fuck does that even mean? Alors, je parle Français, pas parfaitement, et je le comprend, mais pas toujours, et je fait mieux que la majorité. Mais finalement, on m'appelle toujours un Anglophone... comment ça, quand je parle trois langues? Est-ce qu'on appelle tous les immigrés qui parlent Anglais mieux que Français les Anglophones, mème si leur première langue est Macedonien? Et est-ce que le Quebec a le droit de traiter tout les gens d'ailleurs comme des cons juste parce qu'on a une culture different? So I guess my main problem is this attitude of "if you don't like it you can geeeeeeeetttttt ouuut" that prevails everywhere. A lot of shitheads just need to leave their familiar town or province or country for once and realize their tiny world isn't so important that they can enforce culture on outsiders forcefully. And any province that has such shitty food shouldn't try to become a world class country. You gotta do better than tortière and poutine. |
