Bringing Drum N Bass Back To Montreal?! Myth Or Possibility?

For those of you who know me and where I come from, you know that I have kept out of the way of the Montreal Drum n Bass scene up until this year, despite the fact that we have been supplying Canada with most of its DnB records for the last 10 years

As a relatively new guy on the scene, I don't know the history of the infighting and personal wars that have gone on, and I don't want to know!!! Working with the Sub Syndicate on the Benga and Hatcha party, I got to see how a big (8 people!!) group of people could come together over a passionate attachment to their music, and despite having different agendas and musical tastes, could still bring something that allowed the music to reach a wider crowd in a very "feel good" atmosphere.

Since then, I have been wondering what it would take to have a new start for DnB in Montreal. People keep complaining about how dead the scene has become. What can be done to change that?

Or is it possible for any local DnB scene to get along? I know I have heard that even in the UK, infighting ruins alot of the fun and the business.

Who wants to put in their two cents about what can be done to revitalize the scene? I don't want to make this another reason to bring up past crimes. Basically I have liked pretty much everyone who I have met, as everyone brings something different. Don't spoil my harmonious vision with who did what to whom!!!

Let's make this to be an open forum on what could go Right!

Dubstep is fine, but there is a shift in music that goes beyong that.

Pet theory: DnB appeals to obsessive music fans with eclectic tastes. This can be a recipe for niche-ism where people identify themselves with particular groups or sounds, and oppose the others who identify differently.

This seems to be what I hear from folks, but as far as the NOW music is concerned, especially DnB, the move over the past few months has been to reach out to other styles. When we get a new release on a Breaks or House or DnB or Dubstep Label these days, often one side is in a completely different style. Just this week we saw Burial remixing Bloc Party, Bloc Party released on DNA Audio, Deekline and Wizzard remixing Fresh BC, Shackleton mixing Simian Mobile Disco - man I could just go on and on and on adn on.....

And of course within DnB there are so many tendencies - hard, weird, party party...

What do people want now?

deathofvinyl - I can't talk for others, but what I want is DnB thursdays or fridays in MTL... I don't care about the venue, all I care about is the music. I would go every week or every other week for sure. I miss Angels and Blue Dog sooooooo much it's not even funny.

As long as Sylla doesnt make a comeback MCing I'm fine hahaha. I miss Spinal though, Gnat too... that guy's caribean beats were nice hahaha... Anyone know whatever happened to Gnat (Nathaniel Carnegie), I miss going to disquivel where he worked in the fishbowl in the back....

Yeah I'm feeling nostalgic
I'm feeling the love right now..

OOH!! THAT`s the reason. I had wondered about that!

I believe Gnat went off to fame and fortune in middle management, but I always get my stories crossed. I know someone who would know tho`.....

i heard he's a big shot lawer in toronto now or somethin'
i'm sure if i dig hard enough i could dig up some of those old hardsteppers mix tapes.
anyone know where i can get a digital copy of some of that shit like instant gnatification or the spinal tape with trigger and shabba d?
as far as dnb...
all i think it would really take is a few heads to quit talkin' the talk and start walkin the walk.
maybe some young blood that ain't too lazy to push something they care about.
honestly... i think thats been the biggest thing keepin it down these days.
expecting a buncha old guys pushing 40 to be out there every day screaming dnb of the roof tops to all the young kids it might appeal to is ridiculous.
it's kinda like sending a buncha hippy nam vets to fight the war in iraq...
even though they can still rock parties like nobodys buisness...
these guys need some fuckin' rocking chairs so they can continue to bounce the noobs on thier knee while telling stories of the good ol days at angels and stevie hyper d.
my 2 cents.
;P
I'm feeling republican right now..
