i kind of think the basic premise of the following story is.... bullshit...
i was just wondering if any of you pleasant folks had any bright ideas about what we can do about it..... Date: [] Dear Sir, the artistic pseudonym "MEEK" that you are currently using as artist or band was officially registered by french songwriter MEEK and his record label Bedroom Records in September 1996, that is to say several years before the official beginning of your artistic activity. And this action secured an international copyright status. You are thus in infringement of the international law regarding trade name use and ownership. We are therefore asking you to modify your pseudonym, for example by adding another word or another letter to it. If you should ignore this warning, we will unfortunately have to inform our lawyer M Stephane Loisy - Paris FRANCE - about it and will take come legal action against you within your country for fraudulent use of trade name. We ensure you that this message is most serious. Best regards, Yara Kallak, Manager of record label Bedroom Records and artist Meek.

Had almost the exact same threat a couple years ago. Contacted an entertainment lawyer and it pretty much goes like this:
-If you only plan on performing in Canada, fuck them, they can't do anything. -If you plan on performing elsewhere, specially in France, change your name. BUT there is no way they'll sue you. You don't generate enough money as an artist to be worth it for them. Worse that can happen is that they can try to prevent you from entering the country to perform. Even then it's way too much paperwork to be worth their time or money. Enjoy! (I changed my name just to avoid the confusion)

what tipsy said - there is no way to "internationally" register a trade name. you have to register it in each individual country, in order to protect it. so the fact is, unless they have registered it in canada, prior to your use, they have no basis for sueing you. |

hmmmm.... tobias also suggested :
"1. MEEK is a word in the English dictionary. It cannot be copyrighted. It is subject to fair use. Given that they are French, they probably don't know this."

Actually I myself was confused by the name as I had heard of the french meek before. I'd suggest changing or modifying the name, if he had it first.
