So, has anyone else noticed that there's no Cingular in canada? And that apple have a 2 year exclisivity contract to cingular? The iphone isn't going outside the US for quite a while.

The competition won't catch up for years? The only thing new about this phone is that it has a good big touch screen and runs OSx.

It'll be available in Europe this fall. Cingular's contract is only for the us, obviously.
Also, who ever said apple and Cingular have a 2 year exclusivity contract? As for the competition, no, they wont catch up because like you never seem to understand sophia, it's not only the hardware that counts. It's the software. I can guarantee you that there wont be a single other company that puts out software for a similar device that's anywhere near as good. Just look at current cellphones and you'll realize how bad it really is.

if you're talking abotu browsers maybe, I wouldn't know cause I don't use them and I don't know anyone else who does either. Aside from that the mp3 player is all I care about and the one on my phone is plently good, plus it takes memory cards. What they haven't seemed to mention was how much accessing the internet would cost if anything above the plan, that's what makes the diff to me. If it has someo kind of free or included access it would be amazing.

No, it uses EDGE data transfer as well, so if you're not near wifi you can still get on the internet.

it's got wifi and it does ALL the connecting on it's own. I hope they secure a canadian cell phone company before June... whoever gets that contract is gonna blow everyone else out of the water.

yeah and if you're not near an open wifi, there's gonna be charges! If you're not on a plan, I wouldn't be surprised if at was at least $0.01/0.02 per K.
And good luck on getting it in canada. It's built to use ONLY EDGE WIRELESS, which is a cingular exclusive. It doesn't have standard GSM capabilities.

There's four months left for companies to build the EDGE capable stuff into it, or dare I mention, license it! I'd buy one just to use the wifi and mp3 player...

EDGE is cingular tech., I doubt they're going to be licensing it out to their competition.
Like I said before, you're looking at something that's going to be fairly exclusive to the US for the first little while, short of them changing their hardware to be more "open", which would make them more "hackable", which isn't going to happen (well, unless they lose their monopoly lawsuit)

It's not competition if its in a different market. Canada is a different market, unless cingular plans on moving here, licensing is basically free money. For sure they'd do it.
I doubt we'll get it by June tho.. I'll wager it'll be around july/aug..

It's new tech, personally I think carriers are ripping people off like mad.. but getting people to use it, is the only way to see the price drop..
If they give you enough bandwidth, you could probably run skype on your phone and say fuck the voice fee.. ;) the phone does run OSX after all. heh

Steve Jobs Update » nothingnopenope wrote on Wed Jan 10, 2007 @ 5:27pm if the phone runs OS X and is easily accessible to application developers.. it will DESTROY. The possibilities of cell phone applications are endless.. For example.. creating a program that logged all your conversations would be a piece of cake to do. You could run bittorrent on your phone and download stuff from wifi hotspots anywhere while having a coffee.. Buy an episode of a tv show and download it direct... Use ftp/ssh/remote desktop anywhere... I hope they really take advantage of the OS it has. |

I think the OS won't be too too open, that would let people write programs that could circumvent CIngular, and Cingular wouldn't let that happen. Someone mentioned loading skype on it, that would defeat the purpose of the device. Apple could cripple any extra products with a simple mandatory software update if they wanted to.
But Cingular would LOVE to license their Edge technology, why would a business refuse to make money off their invention, it doesn't make any sense. I would bet they would be happy to license it into the states as well after maybe 2 years. But Apple is free to do what they want out of the states, otherwise they wouldn't have signed the contract. I think Canada will get the phone no more than a month after the states do.

Steve Jobs I watched the 2 hour keynote.. he never mentions anything about a 2 year contract with cingular.. he mentioned they're partnering up on the product, but those '2 year contract' words never came out of his mouth.. and he'd be a fool if he did make such a contract. personally I don't think he would have; it's too limiting. Update » neoform wrote on Wed Jan 10, 2007 @ 7:50pm Also, zed, for sure apple is gonna let people make apps for it.. they wouldn't have been publicizing the osx fact for any other reason. I'm positive this phone will be open for developpers.

That lawsuit is hilarious, Apple isn't selling a product named iPhone. Why sue 4 months BEFORE the release, and what could they possibly sue FOR? Apple hasn't broken any trademark....yet.
About letting third party developpers make apps. I simply disagree, you can't let users run skype on their phone. IF Apple made sure people were paying their cell companies... no, no it just doesn't work. Apple is going to retain full control over what apps make it onto their phone or no control at all, and there's no way they are going to give up even some control. They've ALWAYS been that way, do you see third party iPod applications? No. (No, right?)
