| Actually it shouldn't be a problem in the food industry, were it not for people automatically assuming that people with dreads are dirty and don't wash. Dreads are big knots of hair, and as such, when your hair naturaly sheds, it stays stuck within the locks, as opposed to loose hair, weather long or short, that just falls off and into whatever you're doing. With dreads, you wouldn't need to wear a hairnet working with food. |

| It's all about the long hair. Takes time and dedication to maintain it and not have it look like a hippy's dirty butt. People with short hair are just too lazy and not dedicated enough to put the time and effort into maintaining a real look, instead opting for the easy way out of short/shaved hair. |

If you're qualified, experienced, work well with others, and efficiently productive I don't see why dreds should arbitrarily affect chance of employment or advancement in a corporation. The only industries where I could see hair being an issue is the food industry and the military (for potential health reasons) and maybe the retail industry (since traditionally, most employers prefer someone who's "esthetically pleasing" dealing wih customers face to face. In an office environment appearance doesn't dictate responsability, productivity, or efficiency. The only thing it affects is social politics between colleagues which, as we know, isn't required to run a successful business.
Have you worked in a strict business environment. having dreads DID hold me back from being permanently promotred. My boss was my good friend and he told me that straight up. In most businesses, appearance really is everything. |

| No offense but I think that despite your ex-boss's honesty, he's a real jerk for arbitrarily denying you a promotion based strictly on appearance (unless there were other influencial factors incolved). I could yunderstand if a business has a dress code policy but hair isn't clothing and as long as it's clean and well maintained that shouldn't affect your potential for equal job opportunity.
Anyone who puts social semantics like fashion before productivity is not only a bad business person but a bad friend in my opinion. I've worked jobs in the past that asked me to tie my hair back which I wasn't especially enthusiastic about conforming to but did so reluctantly. If I was asked to cut it, denied the job intiially, or threatened to be let go based on that and that alone I'd go straight to the Regie without hesitation. Companies are allowed to have their own hiring and firing policies but they need a valid reason to fire someone, or deny them a raise or promotion in addition to such superficialities that don't affect the quality of work. The Norme Du Travail protects employees aganist that type of stereotypical employer policy.
My current employer happens to be a good friend of mine and knows my credentials are exceptional so there's no physical alteration I could possible do to myself that would cause me not to have the same benefits and equal opportunities that I have at the moment. I guarantee you without a shred of doubt that I could come in tomorrow with facial tattooes, purple dreds, and transparent pvc clothing if I wanted to and I'd be given the same level or professional and moral respect. True friends accept you for the way you are and would never let something as superficial as fashion affect their better judgement. Maybe I'm just lucky to have an employer who respects my personal esthetic decisions, who knows... |
