i derive my opinion by generalizing from the many conversations i've had with people who are into this scene and actually do this stuff |

who's to say that putting metal in your back is any different than putting it in your face nipples or genitals?
what about people who tattoo their arms from one end to another? do they hate themselves too? |

there is a difference between artistic tattoos and piercings and hardcore body mod culture, and i dare say you know this sharon :)
anyways im not claiming to know the truth, above is my opinion and mine alone |

oh yeah, i did mention its not necessarily hatred of self, but hatred of own body. the two often don't coincide at all and people in question arent necessarily aware of either and often subcosciously overcompensate, creating an impression of the opposite. |

this is pretty extreme...concerning the fact that this kind of stuff costs a lot of money...so being non permanent if your skin rejects the peircings after some time...i dont really see the point...
but well, concerning pain and hate of one's body...there are more horrible ways to express it then getting 20 piercings done and add laces and ribbons to them...maybe that some people just wanna try stuff, maybe that they need attention...maybe they are extreme...maybe they search for self acceptance within a social group...who knows...we all have our personal reasons to change the image of our body... but now...just think of scarification or body suspension...this is something quite more extreme then piercings and tatoos... |

i got my skarification on a whimsical urge.
there is no nonsensical psychological/physical motivation. come on, you think people who mod their body will be concern about what other people think? hell no. it's a trip for themselves. pure and simple. |

that's why i said: we all have our personal reasons to change the image of our body...i did, i do...you did, you do...
although im pretty sure that some people could be concern about the opinion of others concerning their looks...even if it implies body mods or anything that is related to body at large...there is always the fashionable character involved in this kind of matter...but on the other hand...do you think that people in tribes would do rites of passage...marking their bodies, their souls...not for others to see?? it's who you are regarding others in your group...it defines a part of yourself that you dare let out of your body...for it to be apparent at some point...it's a mark you choose to put on your own skin... yes, it may be a trip for someone's self...but still, i think it's more than that...even if you care or not about what other people think or if they only have a simple idea of what it could mean to you...either you have a reason for doing something...either you just follow a stream that leads you to it...unless you fall asleep, totally drunk, at a party...and then you wake up with something weird in or on your body...in some place its not supposed to be... so no, auto-mutilation does not mean psychological deficiency...but it has to mean something...good or bad...deep or shalow... |

Self mutilation
It happens when you feel really bad... You have anger, stress, deep pain inside you.. It can't come out... So you hurt yourself... Ça change le mal de place. I don't think corsets are self mutilation in that sense... Kuz, well, for what I know of self mutilation, it's impulsive... You're angry, you hurt yourself, and then it's over. It might be body mutilation, but not in the sense of hurting yourself to release anger... Is it? |
