I've finished Fear and Loathing: The Strange and Terrible Saga of Hunter S.Thompson by Paul Perry, as well as Mass Effect: Revelation.
I have mixed feelings about the first. It was written prior to the F&L movie and re-edited in 2004, only to include a new preface and colour pictures, so there's a lot of HST's life that's missing. It's very informative, especially about the Hunter's earlier years. I would suggest that diehard HST fans stay away from the book if they don't want any of the legend to be tarnished. If you're however interested in HST the MAN, with his many, many, many (to the power N) faults, read it. It shows a lot about Hunter and enough to see that he was normal like the rest of us. His hobbies were just a little bit more extreme. About the second book... My friend lent it to me after I finished the video game. I usually stay away from novels based on licensed products but I had nothing to read, so... It was alright. The writing is subpar, as expected. There's no point in spending a chapter explaining the guy's divorce if it does nothing to the plot and main story. It's annoying and useless. However, the information one can get from it serves as a nice companion piece to the game. You get to understand those characters better. Right now I have no book to read. It's frightening.

I don't like the character (first) but the story is not that good... try Pandora or Marius, they are better! Or continue in the Lestat serie... Blackwood is not bad :)

No, I'm too cool for books endlessly repeating themselves and the fixation Anne Rice has on gay sex.

Seriously, Shindy. You know better than to say this.
There's a fucking difference between being homophobe and not enjoying reading ten books about gay love. One's alright. Two is okay (it's part of the genre). When you realize that the vampirism is only an excuse to promote gay sex, it becomes really annoying. (and there IS gay sex. Sex doesn't only mean penetration... What the hell do you call Armand's sexual life prior to his vampirism?) wiki entry: A fifteen hundred year old Roman vampire Marius, a painter, bought him and took him to his household to raise him. Over the next two or three years, Marius and Armand had a close, sexual relationship.

There's also a big lesbo scene between Maharet and Jessie when she gets transformed ;) Don't forget Louis who was totally in love with Claudia! Pat you misunderstood completely what Anne Rice meant as love between 2 vampires; because of the lack of hunger for physical sexuality, those creatures fall in love with a person instead of their sex. Lestat used to screw all the little girls in his village, he was not gay. Thing is, in reality most people will have an easier, healthier relationship with people from their own sex because there is no game. Most of us have greater friendship with those of our sex because of all the similar qualities it brings. Therefore, remove the sexual instincts and all inhibitions from our education and political stakes, you get this exact reaction. But you are entitled to think otherwise, it's only human ;)

Marius was a vampire when he'd sexually "use" Armand. So your argument fails miserably :P He didn't have a working penis, true. But Armand had one...
All the same, I wrote, "gay sex"; not "exclusive" gay sex. Lestat loved everyone and everything that gave him a bit of attention. There were lots of heterosexual LOVE present. But the more you read, the more you realize that Anne Rice is living her boy fantasy through Lestat. She said it herself that Lestat is who she'd be. She feels like she should be a man... So her "man-man" sex/physical love/desire scenes are the most described in all her books. Remove that and some of the books don't even have a story anymore. I understand that you're all on the defensive about Anne Rice books. I happen to not like them. I don't see why I have to explain myself 0_O. It's a matter of taste. I don't think you're less of a person because you read them, so you don't all have to feel offended :P It'd be really boring if we all liked the same books. Update » DCRn wrote on Wed Feb 20, 2008 @ 12:05pm Just so we understand each other: touching the penis of a 16 year-old boy is both pedophilia and sex, even if the vampire expresses "deep love" for the kid. I'm not failing as you say, but most vampires do not feel the need to have sex. They might remember what it was, they might miss it but the need is not there. Have you ever eaten while not being hungry? Same. I am not defending Anne Rice, or being defensive, I'm just explaining what I understood and as I clearly stated, you are entitled to your opinions and not to like the books, it is not for everyone. Even though my bf loved Memnoch, I miss Lestat who is barely present and I dislike it for that. It really depends! Anne Rice used to write erotic novels, of course sex has to be present in her litterature. Like it is in this world, everything pretty much refers to that in this society. A woman writing men's thoughts cannot be perfect, and maybe you should know that she based Lestat on her husband. She likes men, of course she's gonna have a bigger interest towards them. That's all I'm sayin sugar ;)
