Got A Cure for The Cure?

Q: I used to listen to Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and Korn. But I've recently decided to get serious about my faith, so I've given up listening to those bands. The problem is, I still listen to The Cure, even though I know the music is wrong. I like the band's music so much that I can't stop listening to it. Can you help me?
—Chris

A: First off, I want to applaud you. You've removed some music from your life that you feel will only drag you down. So please be encouraged! You've taken a big step forward in your Christian walk.

Now about The Cure. I agree with you. You'd be wise to find a "remedy" for that band's influence in your life. Consider, for instance, Galore, The Cure's recent greatest hits album. On that album there are several songs with sexually suggestive lyrics.

I also find some Cure songs just plain depressing, like "Want" from Wild Mood Swings. In the search for fulfillment, lyricist/singer Robert Smith says: Give me this and give me it soon/More drink more dreams more drugs/More lust more lies more love/But no matter how hard I want/I know down deep inside/I'll never really get more hope

Pretty sad and, well, hopeless, huh?

I often recommend Christian alternatives to secular bands. But it sounds like you're struggling with The Cure's musical style, not just the lyrical content. I think you need to remove yourself completely from The Cure's sound. The band's musical style might have too much pull on your life.

With that said, I'd like to offer three pieces of advice:

1) Memorize Romans 6:14: "Sin can't tell you how to live. After all, you're not living under that old tyranny any longer. You're living in the freedom of God" (from The Message paraphrase). No matter what temptation you're facing, this promise remains true.

2) Tell a Christian friend about your struggle. Ask this friend to pray for you and to help you stay away from music that hurts your walk with Christ.

3) Seek out some Christian bands that offer messages of hope and healing. Again, I'm not talking about Cure sound-alikes. I also wouldn't recommend Christian hardcore, industrial or goth bands (with sounds similar to Marilyn Manson, NIN or Korn). Please understand, I am not putting down the value of Christian bands that play harder music. But in your particular situation, the heavy sound could be too much of a reminder of music you used to listen to. So try out some new and different styles. Get some suggestions from friends in your youth group. And please check out the album write-ups in "Quick Takes," on page 28.

I want you to know that while I wrote this, I stopped and prayed for you. First, I thanked God for the courageous step you've already taken. Second, I prayed that you'll find the strength to "not fall into temptation" (Luke 22:40).

Yeah cause "Friday I'm in Love" totally isn't happy and joyful.

Also that christian person should be shot for putting his faith ahead of music.

My ex was a cure fan. I've had to listen to them soooo many times. I can stand 2-3 cure songs, and at that, it's just barely.
