Ok, maybe the seats are different, or the guages are digital instead of analog, but when it comes down to it, Apple computers AREN'T any different than a Windows PC with the same specs.

First off, the hardware isn't 'exactly' the same at all. Apple takes a year to optimize components in space and performance in a handful of machines. And to me, those seats, digital gauges, etc... make all the difference. When I'm using my computer, I'm a user, so to me if everything just works, I'm happy.

You're not actually getting desktop-level quality hardware with an iMac, but an on-board solution that can't be changed, fixed or upgraded in the slightest way.

OK, you can't say that it's the EXACT same hardware AND then the PC hardware is BETTER. what's the deal..

Regardless, if just one single component dies, the whole computer is useless anyway. Given that type of problem, you'll be fixing it or bringing it in either way, and with the 3 year warranty, you're 100% covered for problems like that. No need to buy any new anything.

You have no option to keep your computer working if one component fails; it's all-or-nothing.

that happened to me actually. Adonis, Zoe's cat, knocked over a mssive mirror that was behind my computer... whole thing fell, cracked the screen, shattering it.
Cost 900$ for the screen and 300$ for the repair.

In most cases, the hardware you choose to put in the custom will be better than the hardware put into the Mac line.

To me, cost-effective computer building is all about the customs'cause once you've got the hardware anything is possible software-wise.

you're right. BUT, I'm not trying to be cost effective, money is of no concern :) What I want is to buy a computer, prebuilt, all in one, optimized and hawt, even if the temperature is also hot.. these things do get hot, I can vouch for that...

I didn't post the fact that it was an iMac initially because I wanted to see if the specs themselves were top notch... the real debate in my mind was actually more if the SSD was worth it for a desktop system... I should expect faster boot, faster app loads, etc...

a second opinion, especially when mine is so biased, is always useful

I don't disagree with this action, if Soundcloud doesn't want to get sued into oblivion, they shouldn't let people give other people's work away for free. From what I understood, Soundcloud was designed to allow artists to share their tunes, not their mixes of other people's copyrighted work.

What surprises me so much is that people are so willing to pay extra cash for better quality products, but when it comes to Apple, people either swear by them or swear at them.
I mean, is a 100,000$ car worth 90,000$ more than a 10,000$ car. They both get you around no? Well, why aren't computers the same to a certain extent. In general, you're not just paying for the specs, you're paying for the brand, the quality, the support, the notoriety and lots more. Most people don't understand that components aren't all created equal even if they share the same general specifications. Take speakers for example, M-Audio and Adam both make reference monitor similarly sized and powered, but one is 5 times the price, and fuck, it's worth it.

Fanboi's are pretty wack, and I must admit there's a part of me that is one, what with my iPhone 4, my iPad 2 and soon my 27" fully loaded iMac, but what's just as wack are people who feel the need to utterly denigrate anyone and everyone who prefers a certain product and experience over another. You're not necessarily jealous, or a horrible writer syntactically (not aiming at anyone in particular) but why all the hate?
If you want to buy a 200$ canadian tire bike, that's ok, let me buy my 1300$ shimano without telling me what it's worth TO YOU.

I don't care what it costs, hell, I make a killing working on my computer, so I want one that will help me do my job and get the fuck out of the way otherwise. I think it's OK to invest a decent amount into something that at the end of the day is my bread and butter.

As long as they pay you eventually, I don't think there are legally obligated to pay you at a specific time, especially if they claim it's a mistake.
If it starts to happen all the time, then quit.

Thing is you can't ever get into a tiff with your employer like that, cause they'll just as easily fire you.

@Moloch: your jealousy has apparent.

@Host: all computers eventually break down, at which point you replace them, because they are old and outdated anyway... that's what sweet about Applecare... it's 3 years... so by then you've been covered and it's time to upgrade anyway...

money doesn't matter... it's piece of mind too...
btw I will be adding more ram, but 4GB is usually more than enough. On the rare occasions I am running photoshop, VMware, watching videos and playing Starcraft, then I start using the swap space but I'll be upping it to 8GB and I really don't see myself ever not having 5GB RAM free/idle.

I'm very tech savvy, Linux doesn't have the apps I need (Mac os X is Unix anyway). Windows 7 isn't bad, but I have that installed too anyway (bootcamp)
and hackintosh, well that's just scary. besides, I'm highly knowledgeable about hardware in theory, but buying all that shit individually and putting it together, no thank you.

Also, there are some solid benefits to getting an iMac that no other similar PC can do right now, like the built in 27" screen, thunderbolt and of course, the beauty.
Oh yeah, and Mac OS X Lion is coming out soon... Resume and Auto-Save will make it bomb fo shizzle...

You know, you're right, because if I were to buy a machine for 2000$+ with better specs than that, the only thing I could run would be Windows, which would virtually SHIT all over the specs.

you're exagerating though right? I mean, can you even get specs better than that these days?
