i'd love to see a hardcore remix of rihanna or madonna, it would at least make their shit tolerable
:p

Thats cool,

But having to play a Rihanna remix everytime some lone drunk skank demands it would drive me crazy

And you know they'll come right back and request something else similar as soon as you go back to your "regular" set and will shit on you the second you can't meet their demands.

You're basically compromising your art to satisfy someone who dosen't respect you or your music to begin with

When you start taking requests, it never ends, I'm telling you!

can you honestly play a remix on the spot?
i doubt anyone could and therefore playing a shitty song remixed shows a sense of humour and versatility during a set

Gamos, i did specify "use good judgment", i didn't say 'play any old crap any asshole asks you for'...what you say is true; but thnx for telling Djs what they should be about...do you have a request with that? :p

yes, DynV, i meant bars/clubs...raves = no request (but i do take suggestions), for the same seasons you stated.

every once in a while someone will ask for a track and i'll be happy to play it 'cause it's a track i love, or wasn't sure to play 'cause of the crowd but the person gives me the green light, or they'll ask for a track i hadn't thought of playing.

and sometimes they ask for garbage, and i reply: oh, sorry, i don't have that with me.

...

no 'cause you totally missed the point...

but with this i agree: "you know they'll come right back and request something else similar as soon as you go back to your "regular" set"...

i'm not saying requests are awesome, i'm just saying you can't be completely against it. and let me reiterate: i'm not talking about raves.

and btw, preparing your sets?! weak. :p

yeah I prepare and plan my sets, its part of djing, learn about it, I think you're the one missing the point

cause unlike you I never have to resort to playing requests

I get booked a lot too :P

yeah, you get booked alot in bars where ppl make crappy requests. :p

preparing sets is not part of DJing, btw. having an idea of what you want to do is cool, a starting point, pick out the first few tracks to get you in the mood w/out worry...but a whole set planned out?
i'm not a big fan of that, especially if the DJ has been at it for more than a few years.

plus, it's less fun to play that way, imo.

no one's getting offended, no worries :)

and also what's with musicians planning sets when they play a show? They should make new and random music every time

Hold on, obviously I don't map out a playlist and follow it blindly,

But I do have a good idea of what I'm going to bring ahead of time, based on the type of event, the type of crowd and above all the type of music I'm getting booked for

Again, I play everywhere and I don't take requests, never have, never will

Been like that for over a decade
Mise À Jour » Blisss a écrit sur Wed 1 Apr, 2009 @ 12:17am
PS Being prepared has EVERYTHING TO DO with djing. Its the djs that don't prepare properly that fuck up
Mise À Jour » Blisss a écrit sur Wed 1 Apr, 2009 @ 12:33am
I spend on average 3 or 4 times the amount of time I'm actually going to dj on preparation and assembling my sets if not more. For me its all about having pride in what I do

good, that's better ...

again, no requests in raves. just in bars IF i'm getting well paid to please the customers, IF the customers request something decent.

lol @ scottyP...some do improvise though. but playing an actual song w/ a band is totally different methinks.

PENIS FIGHT! ok boys, whip 'em out. winner take all (please note this is a length-only event)

joking aside, requests can be an inspirational point for a dj, it can be a starting point, but nothing more. However, I still stand by the fact that a dj is not my itunes.

I wish I actually put more planning and practice into my sets. as it stands now I never do either.

I never plan a set and I only DJ when there are people there to play for - I never practice.

planning some clever mixes can be great. most of the really really good DJs I knew back in Toronto put a great deal of thought into what they were going to play, and practice like crazy

never me though - I always wing it

being spontaneous is great, but there's also something to be said for really having an idea where you are going with a set to get really creative.

Kid Koala - for instance.. I remember reading an interview with him where he said he would practice 10 hours a day. and turntablists practice routines that bust out live and make it seem effortless...

nothing wrong with that, cuz the end result is the people hear a flawless live set

if a DJ is fantastic enough to do some crazy mind-blowing stellar set on the fly, that's awesome. but many really top-notch DJs have put in hours of practice and forethought to pull it off (whether they admit or not)

just my 0.02

A bar's not paying you to play songs that customers think you should play (they could just get a jukebox)

A bar hires you cause you're a good dj who can do the job, thats all

Request djs never last long cause its impossible to please everyone

All of a sudden you're playing rnb, then rock then techno and no ones happy

Everyone shits on you, then you're fired

Its as simple as that
Mise À Jour » Blisss a écrit sur Wed 1 Apr, 2009 @ 12:29am
I think its really important to establish who's boss from the get go. Thats my advice to you young djs out there.

Don't be an asshole about it, don't be insulting, just convey the idea right off the bat that you're not gonna be pushed around

People have way more respect for a dj with integrity on the long run then someone who just does what people tell him
