After the stereo WAV writer plugin was publicly pirated, the original author announced that he would discontinue development after version 2.14. Impulse Tracker's interface was very similar to, and could be considered the spiritual successor, of ScreamTracker 3. The entire program was coded in Assembly language. Like in most module editors, music is arranged on a grid of channels. Each supports note on and note off instructions similar to MIDI. Impulse Tracker modules use the .IT file extension. One of the features which set this MOD editor apart was NNAs, New Note Actions. If a note on command is received on the same channel as another instrument which is still playing, NNAs allow the user to customize the subsequent action: * Cut: The new instrument replaces the current instrument. * Continue: The old instrument continues to play using its ADSR curve. * Off: The old instrument begins the release section of its ADSR curve. * Fade: The old instrument fades out to 0 volume at a designated rate overriding the ADSR curve. Another feature that set Impulse Tracker apart from other trackers was its support for hardware MIDI channels on the Gravis Ultrasound, InterWave and Sound Blaster 32 card families (provided enough RAM is available). The last version, v2.14 Patch #5, was released April 8, 1999. Well really Neko, I can see you freaking out for nothing and I just don't get it. I'm trying to set up collaboration, not competition.
That said, if Noah doesn't find this important enough yet, who else would be willing to chip something monthly for the file hosting? This could be huge, and it could be mad fun, and we might very well make some waves while uh... making some waves. I would be very excited to work with .mod or .it files but given that I'm no longer Sound Blasting, this will be hard to do. Try to get IT to recognize external sound cards. You can only work with the MOTU which is waaaaayy out of date. And that RAM limitation fucks you right up the ass, try it sometime and tell me how it goes. Trust me man, I am the master of IT programming.

port the impulse tracker sound file to mod. rework with the 1`000`000 trackers that exist out there.
if your still hooked on ableton , port the it to wave format. have your project up, it would be like a local sample station. having file profiling tied to threads is the way to go, and quite easy to setup. but like i said even if you want to start small, you should definitely have .wav size limitation because 10 users will run down your site ressources in a day. or shure go full blown and have the site report the memory lackage ppl will understan, but consider the load, and how maniac some are on 24bit wav. i get this one 5 days if you get ppl to send more than minute samples or packs. (wav mix anyone ?? thats a little useless no ? -> hd wise) Update » cutterhead wrote on Thu Jan 8, 2009 @ 6:31pm id love to have a nice database with beltch fats all custom made and browsable with comment,
but no chill ta moule on that okay

The logistics of it are indeed tricky, and it begs the question, which versions do we keep, which do we scrap?
I was thinking temporary hosting... as in older versions can be expired as needed. Nonetheless, the archiving doesn't have to go overboard if you can cut down on coffee/drug use and organize the project. We could also have a limit on collaborators per project and try to determine who does what step. But I worry about people losing the ball so to speak. Unfortunately, we need to set ground rules for each collaboration, or we have a remix contest where everyone starts with the same sample pack and submits their versions. HMCR did some themed 3.5" releases like this. This is actually not a new idea, it's freetekno, sort of. I would personally propose that the material is all protected by a CC license and that members promise not to profit off of other people's work. As for copyright, just keep your rips on the downlow. But then again there are © violations all over the interwebz.
